One more note.  I started googling "Harvard" "倍率" and trying to tease something out of it.  I find sites like this:

As you might expect, its Japanese people converting the 5%　acceptance rate to a 倍率 of 20.  


It seems that this is just the way Japanese minds evaluate university competitiveness, and I haven't yet found an English language analogue.  Anecdotally, google translate will produce garbage (eg "A school with a high magnification") if asked to translate this.

I think that in most contexts, the proper translation involves a numerical transformation.　Rather than "Tokyo University has a competitiveness rating of 4", "It has an acceptance rate of 25%".  Rather than "倍率が上がる一方だ", "acceptance rates keep on declining".

I almost think defining 倍率 should follow the model of something like 浄瑠璃

I don't know why so many dictionaries want to link this to mahjong only. It is clearly used in other contexts too. I have quoted several passages from yourei.jp which confirm it means something like "people belonging to a certain group" like the wiktionary suggests.

Regarding obviousness: it’s simple, but many such phrases are not obvious (in English in my experience, you can “take a bath”, “have a bath”, “give someone a bath” (all for bathing), but I wouldn’t say “get a bath” – that means “receive a big ceramic tub” to me). (In English, “take a meal” or “take tea” both are acceptable to me, but sound dreadfully old-fashioned, while “take milk in your tea” sounds normal.)

Also, the issue over the kanji spelling (esp. that it’s often 摂る、 as in related 摂食) makes it seem worth a note.

I'm not really seeing "person attached to the world of appearance" though? daijs says "不浄なもののたとえ。" daijr says "常識的な観念を
打破するため、仏や禅僧の比喩として用いる。" nikk "また、もっともきたないもの、取るに足りないもののたとえに用いられる。"


I know the note is pretty long, but I feel "dried shit stick" should be in there somehow. The other way to format it is maybe having 
3 senses (e.g. 1) sth worthless, 2) stick-shaped shit, 3) dried shit stick), but I don't actually think this would be a better 
solution.

I'm not sure that "可能性が大大" is an example of the 大大 found in the kokugos (which appears to be dated/obsolete). If you google "可能性が大大", there are plenty of examples with more than two 大s. It's rather colloquial. Nevertheless, I think these glosses cover both types of usage.
