Refs: | https://jisho.org/forum/5f001d0612a5373894000002-can-shi-yin-mean-attention saw this on the jisho forums. The panel members used to use this expression a lot on the (now cancelled) reality tv show "Terrace House" when talking about participant's love interests, oft. as 矢印が(人に)向く if I remember correctly. https://mdpr.jp/news/1891128 【テラスハウス・新東京編】意外な矢印が続々判明 全員絡む恋愛模様にスタジオ歓喜「これがテラハか!」 https://porori1412.tokyo/2019/12/31/teraha-ep26-netabare/ 今回の見どころは「多国籍新メンバー3名入居‼矢印が向いたのは??」 Like that last site implies, I think the origin of this expression is the ドラマ "relationship charts" over characters and their love interests etc., which very commonly appear on said ドラマ's websites (and perhaps elsewhere). Here's an example: https://www.ktv.jp/kekkondekinaiotoko/index.html#chart (plenty more if you google for 相関図 ドラマ) |

Comments: | I think it's similar to how messages sent between embassies and their parent country are called "cables" in English even though they're not actually telegrams (or cablegrams). Or how congratulatory messages sent between heads of state are still referred to as "祝電" (congratulatory telegram) in Japanese news. I don't think the original meaning should be marked as obscure so having two senses might be better after all. |

Comments: | How's this? (Having spent most of my working life in telecoms, including working on the replacement of our telegram system in the 1970s, it strikes me as a little bizarre to have "telegram" as the only gloss for a term that is still in use, albeit rarely.) |

Comments: | As far as I can tell, all the recent examples refer to official correspondence between heads of state. Not sure it needs to be a separate sense. It's not especially common. |
