Comments: | Despite the kokugos I feel this is now the everyday term for confectionary with no real "polite" nuance. I don't mind if it has a "pol" tag, but I think on balance it's probably better without as someone might think it's restricted to that register. It's a bit like お茶, which often/usually just means green tea in all contexts with no politeness attached (yes I know we have a "pol" tag on it too.) |
|
9. | A* 2020-07-12 01:20:44 Marcus Richert <...address hidden...>
Refs: | お菓子を買って 36 tweets past 24 hours. 6 or so out of those tweets are ですます sentences, the rest aren't. 菓子を買って 12 tweets past week (not counting compounds like 焼き菓子). 1 out of those tweets is a ですます sentence. _ cf with "お友達" where 6 out of 10 most recent tweets have this word in ですます sentences. |
|
Comments: | Rene, if you believe I need to prove my case, you could probably come up with a less insulting way of asking me to do that other than suggesting I'm somehow letting my "feelings" cloud my judgement. Water under the bridge, but let's keep decorum. |
|
8. | A* 2020-07-11 17:58:01 Rene Malenfant <...address hidden...>
Comments: | when we have references to this in a dictionary of polite japanese, a reference saying it's not polite should be needed for removing the tag. facts trump feels |
|
7. | A* 2020-07-11 12:35:36 Marcus Richert <...address hidden...>
Comments: | I get the case for adding pol based on what's in the kokugos, but I feel our loyalty should lie with the users, not other dictionaries. It's not helpful to tell people a word is polite language if it isn't. お茶 likewise shouldn't be tagged. |

Comments: | I'm OK having this as an entry (and prob. あの道 and この道) but I don't think the 2nd sense should be there. Either we do every single sense from 道, or we do just one, or we're being misleading. If it really must be kept, I think the note must go. What does "usual meaning" mean? I have my doubts it's actually "usual" as in "more common." But if it were, why isn't it sense 1? I think small inconsistencies like these makes the dictionary harder to use. |
|
14. | A 2020-06-20 00:44:19 Jim Breen <...address hidden...>
Comments: | Probably time to call it a day on this one. I'm leaving it in largely because of its presence in the JEs. I'm also leaving in the "usual meaning" because I'm aware this is primarily a decoding/passive dictionary and there's a risk that learners might think sense 1 is the only meaning of the expression. I see that GG5 also has この道 entry referencing the same sense of 道 (but not one for あの道.) [Daijr has a この道 entry too; for the 1927 song "この道はいつか来た道".] |

Comments: | 日本語表現文献辞典 does have an "at the most" entry for というところだ/といったところだ. There's also a Tanaka sentence with this meaning: "彼女は多く見ても20歳というところだ。She's at most 20 years old." DAJJ has an entry for といったところだ, describing it as "an expression used when the speaker wants to give a brief explanation about something". It gives "I would say ~; ~ is how I'd put it" as translations. Also applies to というところだ. Sense 1 is the most basic meaning but also the hardest to translate. It's used in all sorts of contexts. This was the best I could come up with. |

Comments: | I agree that the first sense is a bit literal and hardly matches any of the 8 Tanaka sentences that use the phrase. I'm not sure the "at the most" in the JLPT page is much better. I'd be very happy if someone could come up with a better translation. (I often think of this as "so to speak", which actually fits many of the examples.) |

Comments: | I think this is less helpful and I think examples of a genre should have xrefs to the genre, not the other way around. I had a hard time imagining what a "comparison game" was until I looked up the detailed descriptions. I think mentioning there's two players and that there's a judge is helpful. |
