Comments: | Thank you for your feedback. I will continue to add the remaining 旧国名 over the course of a few days (it’s 73 of them in total, maybe a bit overwhelming to add at once. This excludes another 10+ entities that existed on the island of Hokkaido that I might look into later). I have noticed you efficiently trimmed some of the definitions (e.g. “the eastern part” to simply “the east”). I agree with this policy, but shouldn’t we then do the same for all words? For example, for 加賀 “the southern part” was trimmed to “the south”, but for 河内 “the eastern part” was accepted without trimming. |

3. | A 2020-06-08 20:11:15 Jim Breen <...address hidden...>
Comments: | I think this is sufficient and appropriate. Removing the locations would make it a bit limited. Daijirin mentions it's an abbreviation, but I wouldn't go that far. I wondered about a tag such as hist, but it's not necessary or appropriate. |
|
2. | A* 2020-06-08 10:57:07 Tsuchida
Comments: | @Jim Breen; I have understood your comment regarding forks. My apologies. I have added 10 new 旧国名 for now. I will continue adding the rest as soon as I get a positive response. While doing research, I found out that only some 旧 国名 correspond 100% with currently existing prefectures (such as Tosa=Kochi and Kai=Yamanashi). Most former provinces consist of only one half of a currently existing prefecture, or overlap multiple. This is why, if applicable, I have tried to mention the location of the former province as thorougly as possible (e.g. Kawachi (former province located in the eastern part of present-day Osaka Prefecture)). At the same time this is a dictionary and not an encyclopedia, so please let me know if you think this is too wordy. |

It's not a household word but I think it'd be nice if we could translate terms and jargon used in various industries as well, not least for people in these industries (for Japanese companies trying to explain their products in English, for example). But if we can't come up with a useful gloss, let's toss it aside for now. |

In adding the 旧国名 I have been using them in the actual name but not in the prefecture names that appear in the description. Refs: | The 2007 submission said "Quite common, but not a dictionary entry or translation in sight." and added the following passage, presumably from a blog: "土曜日から実家に帰って、オヤジの PC の設定を行う。DVRex 用に使用している PC に Windows NT がインストールされていたり、K6-2 のマシンが新規に組み立てられていたりと、すっかりはまり道だなぁ。" |
|
Comments: | I think the submitter was just quoting the name of the Manga by Sensha Yoshida. I'll move this to the names dictionary as a work. |
