Comments: | yes, they should be split. also, although daij says it's from portuguese, the portuguese word for canary is "canario", not "canaria" (although the islands are the canarias). meikyo & shinmeikai both say it came from spanish. koj says portuguese or spanish |

Comments: | In that case, I will begin adding the 旧国名 and see whether you like it. But before I do, I have noticed that there is no consistency between the already existing definitions in terms of notation. For example: 薩摩 さつま Satsuma (ancient province located in present-day Kagoshima prefecture) 大和 やまと Yamato; ancient province corresponding to modern-day Nara Prefecture 武蔵 むさし Musashi; historical region consisting of modern Tokyo, Saitama and eastern Kanagawa prefectures I would like to hear your opinions about a format to make these definitions consistent. I was thinking myself: Name (former province located in present-day XXX Prefecture) (i.e. the explanation between brackets, with "former" instead of "ancient" and "Prefecture" capitalized.) |

3. | A 2020-06-06 00:26:14 Jim Breen <...address hidden...> | |
Comments: | Two comments: (a) I agree with the suggestion that 県-less versions go in for the prefecture names. In some cases, such as 長野. we should mention it's a city as well. I'll approve this one and reopen as a reminder. (b) I like Tsuchida-san's suggestion to add 常陸, etc. We have a few such old names already e.g. 難波. I wouldn't include the suffix 国. |

Comments: | I am a newbie on this platform so please don't mind my lack of education. I have understood that in the addition of placenames, priority is given to Japanese and English names. I agree with the comment below. Furthermore, I would also like to suggest adding the 70-ish 旧国名 to the dictionary. For example: 常陸 ひたち Hitachi (old province in the area of Ibaraki Prefecture) 伊豆 いず Izu (old province in the area of eastern Shizuoka Prefecture) ...etc. The names of these former Japanese provinces still play a big role in society as they are often used in company names, etc. I would like to leave it open to debate whether these names should then be added with or without the suffix 国 ("no kuni"). |

Comments: | Thank you for your feedback. I will continue to add the remaining 旧国名 over the course of a few days (it’s 73 of them in total, maybe a bit overwhelming to add at once. This excludes another 10+ entities that existed on the island of Hokkaido that I might look into later). I have noticed you efficiently trimmed some of the definitions (e.g. “the eastern part” to simply “the east”). I agree with this policy, but shouldn’t we then do the same for all words? For example, for 加賀 “the southern part” was trimmed to “the south”, but for 河内 “the eastern part” was accepted without trimming. |

Comments: | @Jim Breen; I have understood your comment regarding forks. My apologies. I have added 10 new 旧国名 for now. I will continue adding the rest as soon as I get a positive response. While doing research, I found out that only some 旧 国名 correspond 100% with currently existing prefectures (such as Tosa=Kochi and Kai=Yamanashi). Most former provinces consist of only one half of a currently existing prefecture, or overlap multiple. This is why, if applicable, I have tried to mention the location of the former province as thorougly as possible (e.g. Kawachi (former province located in the eastern part of present-day Osaka Prefecture)). At the same time this is a dictionary and not an encyclopedia, so please let me know if you think this is too wordy. |

Comments: | I don't think this should be an entry. It is very rare and it's not the usual Japanese term for introvert, in fact AFAICT it doen't mean what "introvert" usually does in English. . Far better to add 内向型 as an entry. |
