Back in the dark ages of pre-Internet networking (1980s and early 1990s) there were quite a few LAPs and people said "lap" for them - I guess the Japanese glossary compilers did that too. You won't find it much in WWW pages because it was ancient history before they started being written. The reference I just quoted has it as "ラップ・エム". |

Comments: | The problem here is that when someone encounters 異なり in the wild it's almost invariably the masu stem of 異なる, so this entry for 異なり is potentially misleading, Fortunately, the meaning is fairly close to that of 異なる. I think we need to keep the ことなり there, but [sk] is probably an appropriate tagging. One issue is how text-glossing systems would handle 異なり. In WWWJDIC I use a special glossing file which combines this entry with the masu stem of the verb: - 異なり 【けなり; ことなり(ok)】 (adj-f) unlike; unique; unusual; 《verb stem》 異なる : 異なる(P); 異る 【ことなる】 ; (v5r,vi) to differ; to be different; to disagree; to vary; to diverge Maybe that's anough, but a separate 異なり/ことなり may be appropriate too. |

Comments: | As it is now, this entry is causing confusion with the masu-stem of 異なる. See the referenced forum post. If nikk is the only reference with ことなり, I think we can drop the reading. The "異なり【ことなり】" part of the term "異なり語数" doesn't seem to be related to this entry. Since -なり adjectives are archaic, I think it might be okay to add a [arch] tag here. This will help inform readers that this entry doesn't refer to the masu-stem of 異なる. |

Comments: | I am a newbie on this platform so please don't mind my lack of education. I have understood that in the addition of placenames, priority is given to Japanese and English names. I agree with the comment below. Furthermore, I would also like to suggest adding the 70-ish 旧国名 to the dictionary. For example: 常陸 ひたち Hitachi (old province in the area of Ibaraki Prefecture) 伊豆 いず Izu (old province in the area of eastern Shizuoka Prefecture) ...etc. The names of these former Japanese provinces still play a big role in society as they are often used in company names, etc. I would like to leave it open to debate whether these names should then be added with or without the suffix 国 ("no kuni"). |

Tsuchida: please make sure you respond to the most recent active edit, otherwise we get "forked" threads which have to be rejected. I think your proposed text style is fine. Comments: | In that case, I will begin adding the 旧国名 and see whether you like it. But before I do, I have noticed that there is no consistency between the already existing definitions in terms of notation. For example: 薩摩 さつま Satsuma (ancient province located in present-day Kagoshima prefecture) 大和 やまと Yamato; ancient province corresponding to modern-day Nara Prefecture 武蔵 むさし Musashi; historical region consisting of modern Tokyo, Saitama and eastern Kanagawa prefectures I would like to hear your opinions about a format to make these definitions consistent. I was thinking myself: Name (former province located in present-day XXX Prefecture) (i.e. the explanation between brackets, with "former" instead of "ancient" and "Prefecture" capitalized.) |
