I'm inclined to agree that this sort of search key is best dealt with by the client software.
17. A* 2022-11-26 04:37:33  Stephen Kraus <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
There's a tool here that attempts to decipher censored text such as う○こ:
http://fuseji.net/

Applications such as jisho.org also support regex wildcard searches. For example a search for "う?こ" will bring up all possible matches.
IMO, handling these sorts of forms seems outside the scope of jmdict's capabilities.

  Comments:
I don't think "col" is needed. Children's language is colloquial by default.
I don't think う○こ should be included. All sorts of words can be censored using ○; I think it's unlikely that users would look up them. Also, ○ isn't kana. It would need to go in the kanji field but having an sK form as the only kanji form on an entry is problematic.

My current anime translates as "mage", and that seems like a useful fit to me. eijiro marks as "dated"〈古〉, but that seems a bit silly as "mage" is quite common in the English genres where this term might be used. (role playing games, historical fantasy, etc.)

The fact that it's used in a recently produced/translated anime kind of makes that point for me (Frieren). I believe "mage" was a character class way back in Final Fantasy I for the NES in the late 80s.

I'd also note in favor of this term, none of the other terms here would work particularly well as a substitute in this scenario. magician has modern slight-of-hand connotations. Wizards are men, witches are women, and sorcerer's are a bit too over-the-top powerful in a society with a lot of general "everyday" magic.

Do we really want to tag かわゆい as outdated? I've seen it and I think also heard it used plenty of times. Daij both use an
example from a book from 1907/Meiji 40 (which means we wouldn't tag it as arch if it were a separate sense).

100% of the Seeds You Never Plant Will Never Sprout

Whether we’re talking life in general or we’re talking homesteading it rings true. 100% of the seeds you never plant will never sprout. Many times we have these great ideas in our head, these visions of what we want to accomplish on our homesteads, but we never take that initial step. We never plant that seed to even give it a chance to grow and bring forth fruit.

  Comments:
I've just proposed an entry for "nothing comes from nothing", which has a standard translation into Japanese:
無からは何も生じない

"Nothing comes from nothing" seems to be primarily a philosophical argument about the nature of creation, and much less a parable about the importance of effort and/or hard work. See my comments on the 無からは何も生じない entry for more details, I do not think these entries should be linked.

By prettying-up the "literal" gloss ever so slightly, I don't think any further glosses are necessarily needed. I think the meaning is self-evident, all of my English-language references are just examples of this idea. I don't think there is a "fixed" English equivalent, though.

Googling around, I found a somewhat catchy English-language gloss that is floating around the internet. The source is unknown(anonymous). I think the literal gloss stands well enough on its own, so I wouldn't mind if the explanatory gloss is dropped, but maybe it's helpful to include anyway.

If the old gloss goes back, I think the word "good" should be inserted (よい結果は得られない)
> don't expect [good] things to happen on their own

====

Small note on Rene's comment(2017) - I would avoid any expression based on "reap what you sow" here. This pair is almost always used with a negative connotation.

History:

I've just reindexed the 631 sentences using バス. About 10 were for "bath" (many バス付き, etc. referring to hotel rooms) and one for "bass" (fish). Certainly the "bus" meaning is the only common one.

It's hard to determine how common words like these are, but I don't think バス [bath] is really that common, outside of compounds like
maybe バスタオル. I checked the latest tweets for バス and out of 50 or so, 2 were バスタオル, the rest for the vehicle.

no idea if the gai1,ichi1 tags also belong here or only on バス(=bus), but i assume this is common enough for some kind of tag. perhaps the original gai1/ichi1 lists should be consulted if they have the english word associated with them?

sense 3 is arguably not an abbr. at least it's not an abbr in any way different than sense 2.

in english "double bass" (or "contrabass") is already shortened to "bass", and presumably this is the shortening that was adopted from japanese. and in japanese, the usual term is コントラバス (german), and コントラバス (german) --> ベース (english) doesn't make a lot of sense
