These old province names are quite common in Japan. My first time in Japan was in 松本 (長野県) and things labelled 信濃 and 信州 were all over the place. The main university is 信州大 for example.

Note: I know that this one is also fairly often referred to as 	信州（しんしゅう）. Actually, as can be seen on Japanese 
Wikipedia, all 旧国名 also have an additional 別称 that usually consists of the first character of the name plus 州. I am not sure 
yet about the scope such alternative names are being used, but it might be considered to add them at a later stage (with cross-
references?). As 信州 is really common, I will for now add it as a separate lemma.

OK, I'll put it on the 広島 entry and close it. I'll do the same with Nagasaki.

if the bombing needs to be recorded at all (i'm not sure it does, given that we use "Hiroshima" with exactly this meaning in english, so the only novel part is that it is usually written in katakana), it doesn't really matter to me which of the three approaches is used.

I think option B is what makes sense considering our policies (2/3 rule, etc.), considering the evidence.
I don't think there's an issue mentioning the atomic bombing in the main Hiroshima entry, I don't think it makes the entry less even-
handed or neutral.

Checking across other city names in Japan where katakana is used, it seems to range from rarish up to quite common (e.g. ヨコハマ, where it's the tyre/tire company). ヒロシマ and ナガサキ stand out though, and WWW searching always brings up the bombing. I think it needs to be mentioned somehow.
There are really 3 ways of handling this:
A. a separate ヒロシマ (and ナガサキ) entry with a gloss such as "Hiroshima (esp. when referring to the 1945 atomic bombing)";
B. adding the katakana to the main 広島 etc. entry as a "nokanji", with a note saying "ヒロシマ esp. when referring ...".
C. as for B, but with a second sense instead of the note.
I'd like to canvas views as to which is preferred. My preference is A, mainly because I think the city name entries should be even-handed and neutral. I like modern-day Hiroshima and while its unfortunate history is very evident, I don't think it it should be highlighted in the main dictionary entry like that when there's an alternative approach available.

I assumedly wrongly from the note that the reading of 陸奥 changed in 1869 when in fact 陸奥/むつ split into five provinces, 陸奥/りきおう being one of them. I don't think the note and x-ref are necessary.
