Probably better to have no note at all and instead use a different PoS tag. We "aux" on some similar entries. How this PoS should be used is still an open discussion on the mailing list, but I'll go with it for now. |

Comments: | I think having "if it is not ..." on sense 1 is somewhat confusing. I understand the reasoning for doing it (having read the discussion below), but semantically, it belongs with the other sense. I think it would be better to ignore the 無い/ない distinction, and instead generalise the sense 2 glosses so that they cover both verb and adjective use. |

Comments: | I'm sorry if I said that, or gave that impression, as we obviously do use abbreviations a lot. Apart from the obvious ones like "etc.", "i.e." and "e.g.", there are "usu." (457), "esp." (1977), "incl." (79), "var." (205), etc. The Shorter OED has 4 pages of abbreviations at the front. Many are field tags, but it has a lot I wouldn't bother with. To me it's about saving display space. I see we have 14 cases of "oft." This is only one character shorter than "often", and I doubt it's needed. I'll think about drafting something for the editorial policy. |
|
6. | A* 2019-12-18 03:18:15 Marcus Richert <...address hidden...>
Comments: | I'm fine either way, but I distinctly remember you (Jim) telling me a good number of years ago in a comment that we only use such abbreviations in notes, and I've tried to adhere to that ever since. (there's a chance I'm misremembering, but I don't think I am). Might it be an idea to make a note of it in the policy document? The words we usually abbreviate and the ones we don't, etc. |
|
5. | A 2019-12-17 22:26:52 Jim Breen <...address hidden...>
