This wasn't because Japanese WWW pages changed between 2004 and 2007; it was because Kudoh et al. used the old IPADIC to drive the Google n-gram segmentation, and I used the later and more accurate Unidic to do the KM ones. Comments: | Additionally, in 告白① it doesn't matter who you're confessing to, but 告白② has to be directed towards the specific person one has feelings for. It's really quite something specific that I think needs to be separate from the general "confession" sense. |

Refs: | https://www.tofugu.com/japan/kokuhaku-love-confessing-japan/ KOKUHAKU: JAPAN'S LOVE CONFESSING CULTURE ... kokuhaku 告白こくはく, literally means "confession", and it is done when a man or a woman declares their love to another, and hopes to begin dating that person. ... You may go out with the person a few times or go out on a group date, but your relationship hasn't technically started until this love confession, aka kokuhaku, occurs. https://skdesu.com/en/confess-kokuhaku-tsukiatte-kudasai-request-dating/ The art of declaring or confessing love in Japan is known as Kokuhaku [告白] already in the case of inviting a person to go out or date after declaring yourself, if you use Tsukiatte kudasai [付き合ってください]. Kokuhaku [告白] literally means “confession”, and it is done when a man or a woman declare your love to another, and hopes to start dating that person soon after. The word can also mean recognition and even confessional. https://ci.nii.ac.jp/naid/40019825078 恋愛における〈告白〉の形成に見る現代日本社会 (unfortunately not available) https://ir.lib.hiroshima-u.ac.jp/ja/00019550 "恋愛における告白の成功・失敗の規定因" English title: "Factors influencing success and failure of confessing one's love" ↑ This is a good example why "confessing one's love" doesn't actually work well as a translation. It's not necessarily immediately obvious what "success/failure" refers to here with that gloss. How can you fail at confessing your love? If somebody told me "I failed at confessing my love" I'd first assume they were saying they just didn't go through with it. 告白を失敗 |
|
Comments: | I really think there's a really large cultural context to Japanese 告白 which is something that demands a proper explanation and lumping it in with any random confession is doing a disservice to our users who largely are beginner- level learners. Also this sense is decidedly [vi], which alone is a very good reason to have it separately from the vt "confession". (kind of irrelevant but there's a very good translation for this sense in Swedish: "fråga chans", except it's only used by elementary school kids. https://en.bab.la/dictionary/swedish-english/fråga-chans ) |

Comments: | I don't think absolute values for variant forms are that meaningful when it comes to common words. With a threshold like 10k hits, we'd end up including all sorts of rubbish that most people would very rarely (if ever) encounter. If text glossing considerations are the main sticking point here, then we should implement hidden kanji/reading fields. Users don't need to be shown オンナノコ. |

|
Comments: | Removed [uk]. What is our official cutoff for [uk] by the way? This is very close to a 50/50 split, so probably not controversial to remove here (encountered myself in song lyrics with kanji). But it now occurs to me that I've been treating it as 50%, and that has always appeared to me to be the practice here. I've never participated in a discussion on this question, but it seems like [uk] should imply kana-only should be well above 50%. "Usually" seems quite a bit stronger to me than "more often than not". Or, phrased differently, it seems like if you are highly likely to encounter the kanji form, and if you wouldn't look odd using the kanji form, then [uk] might be misleading. Incidentally (reading earlier comments), this was also a "star studded sky"-type context. ==== I googled "what percent is usually". Google returns: https://grammar.reverso.net/frequency/ always 100 percent of the time (or almost 100%). usually about 80 percent of the time. <----- 80%, seems close to my intuition often more than half of the time. sometimes less than half of the time. rarely about 20 percent of the time. never at no time. Whatever our intentions might be, or might have been, it seems reasonable to expect that an average reader who sees "usually kana" on a term is going to expect something in the 80%+ range, not 50.01%+. |

Comments: | I proposed this after seeing this word being used in the wild. When I looked up 利権 I was faced with 3 very different glosses in the same sense, so 利権ビジネス was not obvious at all. I'm fine with dropping the second gloss. Also, this seems to mean 'company granted a concession'. |
|
3. | A* 2020-05-21 12:17:30 Jim Breen <...address hidden...>
Comments: | I'm having a couple of problems with this: - it's pretty much 利権 + ビジネス, but the 直訳 "concession company" doesn't actually mean much to me - the reference doesn't explain that well what it really means (assuming it's accurate - some of those "best answers" are off the mark.) - AFAICT a "concessionaire" doesn't mean the same thing as a "company that deals with concessions". It's more an entity that's been granted a concession. I'm not convinced it's needed, and I certainly think it needs a more informative gloss. |

I have extended the text at https://www.edrdg.org/wiki/index.php/Editorial_policy#Old_and_Rarely_Used_Terms to reflect some of this discussion, especially Rene's enumeration. |
|
9. | A* 2020-05-21 03:00:04 Marcus Richert <...address hidden...>
Comments: | I think there's an issue with lumping in Meiji-era words with 8th century words, which would be what we're doing if we call them all [arch]. 現代日本語, modern Japanese, is generally defined to begin with the Meiji period. But it's not that I mind calling Meiji words "arch" - other dictionaries use "archaic" to mean "old-fashioned" and "obsolete" to mean words that are not in use at all. I think it's worthwhile to distinguish between modern Japanese and other older forms of the language. |
|
8. | A* 2020-05-21 01:33:09 Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
Comments: | I agree that the arch/obs distinction is unclear and that obs should be reserved for the category of words that Rene described. While it's true that Meiji-era literature is still widely read, I think we should explore the option of extending the scope of the arch tag to include obsolete terms from this era. The bakumatsu/Meiji cutoff is logical, but it can be difficult with the tools at our disposal to know whether a particular word was common at that time. Words don't just suddenly stop being used; it's a gradual process. And even if a (now-obsolete) word *was* common in the Meiji era, is there an issue with describing it as "archaic"? Plenty of "archaic" words in English appear regularly in late 19th and early 20th century literature. |
