We accept 50%+ for [uk].
8. A* 2023-11-26 18:25:27  Brian Krznarich <...address hidden...>

All these stats were given earlier, actually:

ちりばめた	85914	49.2%
散りばめた	88672	50.8% <- kanji wins

ちりばめ	397259	49.6%
散りばめ	403200	50.4% <- kanji wins

Dictionary form is more likely kanji, but dictionary form isn't common.
散りばめる	8731	47.5%
ちりばめる	9668	52.5% <- kana wins
  Comments:
Removed [uk]. What is our official cutoff for [uk] by the way?

This is very close to a 50/50 split, so probably not controversial to remove here (encountered myself in song lyrics with kanji).

But it now occurs to me that I've been treating it as 50%, and that has always appeared to me to be the practice here.

I've never participated in a discussion on this question, but it seems like [uk] should imply kana-only should be well above 50%. "Usually" seems quite a bit stronger to me than "more often than not". Or, phrased differently, it seems like if you are highly likely to encounter the kanji form, and if you wouldn't look odd using the kanji form, then [uk] might be misleading.

Incidentally (reading earlier comments), this was also a "star studded sky"-type context.

====

I googled "what percent is usually". Google returns:
https://grammar.reverso.net/frequency/
always	100 percent of the time (or almost 100%).
usually	about 80 percent of the time. <----- 80%, seems close to my intuition
often	more than half of the time.
sometimes less than half of the time.
rarely	about 20 percent of the time.
never	at no time.

Whatever our intentions might be, or might have been, it seems reasonable to expect that an average reader who sees "usually kana" on a term is going to expect something in the 80%+ range, not 50.01%+.

listing the brother sense last, as a mixture of meikyo and the other approaches seems reasonable. there's no way that anyone is reading the noun 兄 as けい without furigana

I've sat on the fence on this for a long time, as I can see both positions are valid. I think I'll leave it in:
- it is a Daijirin entry (although that just points to と言えば)
- the n-grams seem to be saying that 言えば gets a lot of use without the と, certainly in contrast with the other と言え... expressions.

We actually include the と for と言う expressions (See と言うと, と言うのは, と言うことは, と言うのも, etc.) All my refs (kokugos, JEs, grammar dictionaries) do the same. I think we can safely delete this. It doesn't serve any purpose as long as we have a と言えば entry.

An odd one. 触れる is intransitive, and this expression is making a sort-of intransitive clause using an を, as in "彼は彼女の肩に手を触れた。 He touched her on the shoulder." There's also 手で触れる which seems to mean much the same.
Anyway, since it doesn't seem to sit comfortably in the usual basic grammar rules, I'm suggesting adding it.

OK.
It's an adverb in the kokugos. No need for exp.
せめて is an awkward one to translate because it can mean "at least" or "at most" depending on whether the thing/quantity/action/etc. is better or worse than the ideal.
せめて2000円なら買うのだが - 2000 yen is the most I'm willing to pay.
せめて2000円なら売るのだが - I would take 2000 yen, at the very least.
I don't know if we want to keep the せめてもの entry (or just have an adj-no sense here) but I propose these glosses.

I also don't know if this should be an entry or not, but if it's an entry, I don't think it should have an expl - again, it's not a Japanese
concept, jmdict is not a general encyclopedia but a wa-ei dictionary, if people want full information about astronomical or philosophical
concepts, etc. they can find those in better-updated encyclopedic entries. This is also what the actual editorial policy suggests:
"where the English meaning is an obscure technical term, add a short explanation in lay terms after it in parentheses. Do not add such
explanations where the English meaning should be clear to a literate user (this is not an English dictionary.)"

and the japanese wiki page has no japanese references at all, and it was likely constructed simply by someone translating the english page.

i don't really have a problem with this going in, but if it does, i think there should be some kind of [expl] gloss on there. it's pretty obvious that 動物園仮説 translates literally to "zoo hypothesis", so if you're looking this up in a J-E dictionary, it's probably because you have no idea what the "zoo hypothesis" is. Hi Jim. Idioms like these are welcome. A short translation leading is best, followed if necessary by a contextual comment in parentheses or an "[expl]" gloss.

Hi James, I would love to see more idiom entry suggestions from you (though I'm most likely not the person who will spend time vetting them).
Also I agree us editors can be a little hostile to imperfectly sourced/formatted entry suggestions sometimes, which I think is unfortunate, but I do
hope it doesn't put you or others off from contributing to the project.

Hi. It's been a while, but as I recall, the problem was not "too many" fish names, it was that they were submitted in a style that was inconsistent with our regular practice. i.e., IIRC, all possible names for a fish were submitted as a single entry, even if they had different etymological origins. (e.g., Katakana from English was merged together with names that were clearly Japanese in origin.) I also would not characterize a disagreement as an "attack".

For this entry, I'm not sure how best to clarify that it means wrinkles as opposed to literal crow's feet. It could be handled as an expl gloss, or as parenthesized info.

I'll close this now to lock in the entry and shorten the queue, then reopen it for a while if we want to consider it further.
I have extended the text at https://www.edrdg.org/wiki/index.php/Editorial_policy#Old_and_Rarely_Used_Terms to reflect some of this discussion, especially Rene's enumeration.
9. A* 2020-05-21 03:00:04  Marcus Richert <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
I think there's an issue with lumping in Meiji-era words with 8th century words, which would be what we're doing if we call them all
[arch]. 現代日本語, modern Japanese, is generally defined to begin with the Meiji period. But it's not that I mind calling Meiji words
"arch" - other dictionaries use "archaic" to mean "old-fashioned" and "obsolete" to mean words that are not in use at all. I think it's
worthwhile to distinguish between modern Japanese and other older forms of the language.
8. A* 2020-05-21 01:33:09  Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
I agree that the arch/obs distinction is unclear and that obs should be reserved for the category of words that Rene described.
While it's true that Meiji-era literature is still widely read, I think we should explore the option of extending the scope of the arch tag to include obsolete terms from this era.
The bakumatsu/Meiji cutoff is logical, but it can be difficult with the tools at our disposal to know whether a particular word was common at that time. Words don't just suddenly stop being used; it's a gradual process.
And even if a (now-obsolete) word *was* common in the Meiji era, is there an issue with describing it as "archaic"? Plenty of "archaic" words in English appear regularly in late 19th and early 20th century literature.

I have proposed the merge of this with じゃーん, etc. This can be deleted/rejected if that's approved. Maybe someone can consider the じゃん as an abbreviation of じゃん拳.
2. A* 2020-05-20 05:24:23  Marcus Richert <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
They really say じゃむ, too? I don't think I've ever heard that and I'd like to see some evidence of it.
If not, this should prob. be merged with our other じゃん entry. (the same entry should probably also have a じゃん [abbr] for じゃんけん (see
顔じゃん, 足じゃん)
_
じゃじゃん is a related expression we should also have.
