Comments: | I think we're now only using the [expl] tag for "untranslatable" Japanese words that are glossed with transliterations. It doesn't seem necessary for [unc] entries. |

Comments: | If the display of an entry in the database WWW page has: <= headword, etc. it means that the indicated entry has a cross-reference TO the entry you are viewing. It is purely informational. => means there is a cross-reference FROM this entry. <=> means there are cross-references in both directions. There is no actual automatic cross-referencing. HTH |

Refs: | https://jisho.org/word/ヽ (no back-references visible without explicit back-ref included in ヽ entry data) |
|
Comments: | Just a little house-keeping tidy up. Adding back-references to 2213380・一の字点, so that people can find all related kana repetition marks from a single one. [To be explicit: Jisho.org does not seem to implement automatic generation of back-references, so while you can find ヽ from 一の字点 (since ref is in 一の字点 data), you can't automatically find 一の字点 from ヽ (since back-ref not explicitly in ヽ data). After checking confirmation page, I notice that there are two 'See also' links on that page, one of which is the one I just added, and the other seems to be automatically generated by this JMDICT software (but it is not actually included in the data entry for ヽ). This indicates to me that the local JMDICT software automatically generates such references, but *not* in the data, leaving such automatic back-referencing to be re-implemented in any software that uses JMDICT data. So, I wonder, what is the current policy for how to handle such automatic vs. manual cross-referencing/back-referencing? Has it been decided that client software should implement their own back-referencing, and so manual back-references should be avoided? Or, has it been decided that manual back-referencing is optional; allowed, but not automatically supported? Or is it encouraged? Or has there not yet been a discussion/consensus on this? Just hoping for some sort of guidance here. Instead of going ahead with multiple edits to other entries, along the same lines, I'll await a response on this one to see what policy I should be following. Cheers!] |

Comments: | It's a Chinese to Japanese dictionary, i.e. those 曲 and 阿 entries are Chinese words, not Japanese. It's not suitable as a reference. 暈 is still visible but in a note instead of the kanji field. This is our usual practice for forms that only apply to one or two senses. Daijs/meikyo/smk do it the same way. 目の下に暈 gets zero Google hits. "bend" is not a separate sense in daijs and meikyo. But this usage appears to be quite rare. It should probably be lower down. Smk describes it as "雅語". |

Comments: | 1. it's not a chinese dictionary, it's a japanese 中日辞典 made by 三省堂, i think it does have at least some legitimacy to kanji usage plus, all the dictionaries that have "曲" (which seem to be the minority as most have only 隈 and 暈) also have the "へんぴな所" definition 2. 暈 does seem to be used for dark circles under the eye 3. isn't the policy to keep forms in multiple kokugos visible? 4. i don't think the "bend" can be added to sense 1 as daijr, smk, shinkoku and koj all have it as a separate sense also this is just my opinion but i don't think restr tags clutter the entry, but i understand the reluctance to use them here as there's no kokugo to follow from |

Comments: | The kokugos have no restrictions for 曲 or 阿. I don't think we can use Chinese dictionaries as a guide to Japanese kanji usage. Also, it's not worth cluttering the entry with restr tags for such rare forms. I think "bend" can be added to sense 1. smk has "〈暈〉とも書く" for its "濃い色と薄い色とが接する所" sense but our glosses are more specific. 暈 isn't used for dark circles under the eyes. The "remote place" sense is archaic. I don't think it's needed. |

Comments: | from my analysis: - "曲" refers to remote places (point 1 + all the dicts that have it also have a definition for "へんぴな所"), added new sense (which is present as 古語 in shinkoku as well) - "阿" refers to bent/curved places (point 2, similar defs in multiple dict), added new sense (should be original meaning according to smk) |

Comments: | JT: There has been much talk in Japan recently about the imminent danger posed by an “overshoot,” a word used with no Japanese translation, little context and an apparent disregard for the English language, baffling English and Japanese speakers alike. Of the many Japanese politicians, experts and journalists who have adopted the word as part of their virus lexicon, few seem to have taken a moment to ponder what it actually means or where it comes from. According to the health ministry, “overshoot” means an explosive spike in coronavirus infections in which the number of patients doubles within two to three days. Officials fear “overshoot” will lead to the collapse of the health care system. In Tokyo, the number of infections has grown more than sixfold over the past two weeks, but government officials maintain that an “overshoot” has not occurred here or anywhere else in the country. |

Comments: | 血の汗 has the same meaning and is more common. How about this? "Blood, sweat and tears" is the equivalent expression in English. "Sweat of blood" is a little awkward which is why I've made it a lit gloss. I don't think we can use "sweating blood" because 血汗 doesn't refer to the act of sweating. Comments: | No sign of Wu being used as a Japanese name - Chinese surnames don't belong here. Reinstating the former "Wu" entry, which was reduced without explanation. |

Comments: | A few problems: - it's an old virtually unused kanji. Not in the usual JIS set. I doubt you'd find anyone today in Japan with that kanji in their name. - when I referred to Chinese names I meant people like Xi Jinping; not just anyone mentioned in an article. I don't think we need it. |

Comments: | Generally I think Chinese names should go in this (Japanese) dictionary if they are the names of people who are mentioned in Japanese texts, newspapers, etc. I don't really think Chinese or Korean, etc. surnames and given names are automatically appropriate just because they are written in hanzi/hanja. Do you have a Japanese reference for this one? |
