1. [unc]

I think we're now only using the [expl] tag for "untranslatable" Japanese words that are glossed with transliterations.
It doesn't seem necessary for [unc] entries.

If the display of an entry in the database WWW page has:
  <= headword, etc.
it means that the indicated entry has a cross-reference TO the entry you are viewing. It is
purely informational.
=> means there is a cross-reference FROM this entry.
<=> means there are cross-references in both directions.
There is no actual automatic cross-referencing.

https://jisho.org/word/ヽ (no back-references visible without explicit back-ref included in ヽ entry data)
  Comments:
Just a little house-keeping tidy up. Adding back-references to 2213380・一の字点, so that people can find all related kana repetition marks from a single one.

[To be explicit: Jisho.org does not seem to implement automatic generation of back-references, so while you can find ヽ from 一の字点 (since ref is in 一の字点 data), you can't automatically find 一の字点 from ヽ (since back-ref not explicitly in ヽ data).

After checking confirmation page, I notice that there are two 'See also' links on that page, one of which is the one I just added, and the other seems to be automatically generated by this JMDICT software (but it is not actually included in the data entry for ヽ). This indicates to me that the local JMDICT software automatically generates such references, but *not* in the data, leaving such automatic back-referencing to be re-implemented in any software that uses JMDICT data.

So, I wonder, what is the current policy for how to handle such automatic vs. manual cross-referencing/back-referencing?

Has it been decided that client software should implement their own back-referencing, and so manual back-references should be avoided?

Or, has it been decided that manual back-referencing is optional; allowed, but not automatically supported? Or is it encouraged? Or has there not yet been a discussion/consensus on this? Just hoping for some sort of guidance here.

Instead of going ahead with multiple edits to other entries, along the same lines, I'll await a response on this one to see what policy I should be following. Cheers!]

  Comments:
Changed from [n] to [unc] to match with discussion resolution in 1000020 (ゝ). Since I was trying to add this to my IME (Windows 10, Japanese language pack), I checked Jisho (using JMDICT data) to see what part of speech to use; but 'noun' just didn't seem right. Checking 1000020 (ゝ) gave [unc] which seemed at least more reasonable, if incomplete.

Maybe there is some classification for 'special symbol' that I don't know about? Is 字点 a 'part of speech'?

2. A* 2018-01-30 12:06:10  Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
Technically speaking, I don't think this has a reading. どうのじてん (同の字点) and のま are both names. The other "readings" are just ways of calling up the symbol in an IME.
We had a discussion about these types of symbols a few months back (entry 1000020) and agreed to drop readings altogether but oddly, 々 has to go in the kanji field, whereas whereas ゝ,ゞ,ヽ, and ヾ have to go in the reading field.
Therefore, in order to keep this we need a reading.
I'd go with のま/ノマ only, given that we have an actual source for it.
I don't think we need "noma" as a gloss.

I considered adding ik tags but with these sorts of on-mim terms it's usually difficult to
do a regular/irregular division. I'll tag them now. The reason I like including forms such
as フウフウ is that I want someone encountering them to be able to look it up. I wouldn't
bother if it was quite rare, but in this case it's not.
As to whether フウフウ et al. have this meaning, well I assume Rene checked when he added

Thanks for the explanations on your decision. And sorry for the long reply. I was just worried that if I didn't go into the whole thought process, it might seem like I was arguing for a very nit-picky thing, when really for me it's much more of a big-picture kind of question.

With that in mind, I notice that no one has yet responded to the point I made about JMDICT being the data source for many Japanese language learning tools, and even if data may not reflect popularity (as in the example of "(wa) katakana at top"), it may still be worthwhile for the sake of documenting the language itself.

All that said, I respect and accept your decision on this particular entry; but I'm still interested in hearing your thoughts/opinions about this more 'philosophical' point about how JMDICT should (or should not) attempt to support language learners, rather than just reflect current-day usage.

Is such discussion appropriate in these comments or is there another/better way I can ask about this kind of thing?

Jim, I'll look for your email address and try to email you. Thanks for the offer. [D'oh! I see it now at the top of the confirmation page.]

Thanks, Marcus. I think that covers it, and I'll close this off now. I don't mind having the kanji form shown on the basic forms (GG5 has 可き in the べき entry), but I do think it is inappropriate to have them in the virtually-always-kana expressions.
Re この/此の/etc. I see Daijirin and GG5 have the 此の, but the other JEs don't.
Marcus: I've added a GitHub issue for [rare]
Rob: if you want to find out more about the n-grams, email me. They are not the counts you get from Google searches, which are almost useless.

It's a Chinese to Japanese dictionary, i.e. those 曲 and 阿 entries are Chinese words, not Japanese. It's not suitable as a reference.
暈 is still visible but in a note instead of the kanji field. This is our usual practice for forms that only apply to one or two senses. Daijs/meikyo/smk do it the same way.
目の下に暈 gets zero Google hits.
"bend" is not a separate sense in daijs and meikyo. But this usage appears to be quite rare. It should probably be lower down. Smk describes it as "雅語".

1. it's not a chinese dictionary, it's a japanese 中日辞典 made by 三省堂, i think it does have at least some legitimacy to kanji usage
plus, all the dictionaries that have "曲" (which seem to be the minority as most have only 隈 and 暈) also have the "へんぴな所" definition
2. 暈 does seem to be used for dark circles under the eye
3. isn't the policy to keep forms in multiple kokugos visible?
4. i don't think the "bend" can be added to sense 1 as daijr, smk, shinkoku and koj all have it as a separate sense

also this is just my opinion but i don't think restr tags clutter the entry, but i understand the reluctance to use them here as there's no kokugo to follow from

The kokugos have no restrictions for 曲 or 阿. I don't think we can use Chinese dictionaries as a guide to Japanese kanji usage. Also, it's not worth cluttering the entry with restr tags for such rare forms.
I think "bend" can be added to sense 1.
smk has "〈暈〉とも書く" for its "濃い色と薄い色とが接する所" sense but our glosses are more specific. 暈 isn't used for dark circles under the eyes.
The "remote place" sense is archaic. I don't think it's needed.

from my analysis:
- "曲" refers to remote places (point 1 + all the dicts that have it also have a definition for "へんぴな所"), added new sense (which is present as 古語 in shinkoku as well)
- "阿" refers to bent/curved places (point 2, similar defs in multiple dict), added new sense (should be original meaning according to smk)

gakken katakana dictionary explicitly calls it 和製, and as per Jim's examples, this is consistent with our style

if you are feeling confused as an uninitiated member, the advice since the dawn of the internet has always been "lurk more".
https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=lurk more

don't remove things without a reference. if you're arguing that we're being inconsistent, then give explicit examples as references (as Jim did)

if you post using a name and provide references for your submissions, you'll find us rather welcoming so long as you avoid lobbing insults. with the exception of Jim, the entire editorial team was assembled literally by welcoming contributors.

The absolute majority of the ハラ (harassment) entries are not tagged as wasei. And while the obscure パ_ス_コン might be, パ_ソ_コン is not. I'm also 100% sure I've seen this mentioned in the comments of a similar entry where the consensus was that words that contain gairaigo abbreviations that aren't themselves used in English should not be marked as wasei, and I'm pretty sure I saw you, Jim, participate in that discussion too. I'm pointing out this inconsistency for the sake of the dictionary, not because I have anything to gain from it, and the sort of overbearing attitude on display here is very unbecoming. I think this is a bigger issue for jmdict, how non-editors are more often than not treated like unwelcome riff-raff. I see disparaging comments directed towards Nicolas Maia all the time, for example, and it just makes me shake my head. I also don't get why it seems to provoke you guys so much that people many times submit entries without references. It's almost as if you don't want the project to grow. Do you want the dictionary to be as complete as possible or not?

I get the editing team consists of a bunch of grumpy middle-aged to old men doing this in their spare time, but you might want to think about how this comes across to the uninitiated. I'm 100% sure you would have many more people participating in a positive way if you worked on being more welcoming. (and the dictionary would both be more complete and its entries of a higher standard too)

How about this? "Blood, sweat and tears" is the equivalent expression in English. "Sweat of blood" is a little awkward which is why I've made it a lit gloss.
I don't think we can use "sweating blood" because 血汗 doesn't refer to the act of sweating.
