Comments: | 日本語表現文献辞典 does have an "at the most" entry for というところだ/といったところだ. There's also a Tanaka sentence with this meaning: "彼女は多く見ても20歳というところだ。She's at most 20 years old." DAJJ has an entry for といったところだ, describing it as "an expression used when the speaker wants to give a brief explanation about something". It gives "I would say ~; ~ is how I'd put it" as translations. Also applies to というところだ. Sense 1 is the most basic meaning but also the hardest to translate. It's used in all sorts of contexts. This was the best I could come up with. |

5. | A* 2020-04-10 03:09:57 Jim Breen <...address hidden...> | |
Comments: | I agree that the first sense is a bit literal and hardly matches any of the 8 Tanaka sentences that use the phrase. I'm not sure the "at the most" in the JLPT page is much better. I'd be very happy if someone could come up with a better translation. (I often think of this as "so to speak", which actually fits many of the examples.) |

Comments: | See comments on 純米酒 and 純米. We're a glossing dictionary. This is translated into English overwhelmingly as "junmai ginjō sake". xref, if approved, should be [see=純米[2]]. We've already used an [xref] to explain ginjō. If we use an [xref] for 純米, we can forgo the [expl] entirely (my preference). Otherwise, the "proper" [expl] would seem to be: [expl] high-quality sake made from only white rice milled to 60%, kōji, and water, brewed by low temperature fermentation without the use of distilled alcohol This could come up in other terms that use 純米 and/or 吟醸. (I have no intention of entering additional sake types, but I think there is an argument for doing so). |

Comments: | I think the third gloss makes this entry more confusing. "Mother church" has multiple meanings depending on location and Christian sect, but the third gloss makes it seem like it's restricted to that meaning. At a quick glance I didn't really find that definition in the refs either |

Comments: | There's no consistency (3 different meanings) in the kokugos for the second sense; I'm just going to ignore it. It's such an obscure/archaic term that it doesn't really matter. Generally, words like this aren't worth adding unless you encounter them in literature, etc. |

Comments: | We're still at a stage where "immunity passport"/"免疫パスポート" is put in quotation marks every time it appears in print. All sorts of new terms are being coined and used by the media during this pandemic. I don't think we need to add them just because they're common, especially when the meaning is easy to derive, as is the case here. I believe we should be more selective about which ones we include while the pandemic is ongoing. We can always add them later. |
