Comments: | Is it never used in the usual English sense of an escort for a (usu. young) person? Looking up "chaperone" in the Kenkysha EJ xrefs to chaperon, which has the first sense of "シャペロン《若い未婚の女性が社交場などに出るときの付添い; 多くは年配の女性で, 社交上の行儀作法を守っているかも監督する; 広義には一般に若い人を監督する責任のある人》." That "シャペロン" can be misleading as it's possibly just a transcription of the English/French. Certainly Daijirin and KOD追加語彙 only have the protein gloss. |

Comments: | This term is (supposedly) used by non-Japanese people to refer to the way Japanese people smile. Most of the online hits are just explanations of the meaning. |
7. | A* 2020-10-11 03:18:52 Jim Breen <...address hidden...> | |
Comments: | This was discussed in another entry, and it was agreed that our style is to avoid capitals on old/new/middle unless it was a recognized name, as in the Old Testament, etc. That said, I think that you are raising a valid point here about language identification. I see we gloss 古ノルド語 as "Old Norse", and to me that is correct. There was a language which is now known as Old Norse, with the"Old" being part of the name. (Similarly I'd translate Nynorsk as "New Norwegian" with a capital N on the New.) I wouldn't object to putting the capitals back on those language names. I'd like first to give Robin and others a chance to review and comment. |

Comments: | It's a little unclear whether this is just a product name, or an acceptable translation for "excursion train". The Japanese term "観光列車" turns up many more search results, however the English term "Joyful Train", taken from the wasei-eigo, also turns up a lot of results. As the meaning of "excursion train" isn't really apparent from "joyful train", I think it may merit inclusion. |
