Comments: | Just quoting GG5's subentry. I don't feel like justifying this any longer, and as Jim Rose points out, it has issues. |
|
6. | A* 2020-04-20 03:35:49 Marcus Richert <...address hidden...>
Comments: | "硬く" is just the adverb form of the 硬い adjective. We don't usually include these unless they are, for whatever reason, included in one or more major dictionaries. Also I still don't think this should be an entry. Like Jim Rose pointed out, it ignores the differences between the different kanji, and also ignores all other meanings held by かたくなる outside of "to become stiff". GG5 is often not the best guide for what to include, I think. No かたくなる is not an entry in daijs or daijr. (though 硬くなる alone is in nikk) |
|
5. | A* 2020-04-19 04:09:15 Jim Rose <...address hidden...>
Comments: | I read the comments posted when the 硬くなる、固くなる、堅くなる entry was differentiated from 硬い、堅い、固い. My questions: why doesn't the dictionary form occur in the dictionary? 固く is defined on EOW as 1) faithfully(約束する 2) fast(主義・主張・信念などが 3) rigidly(物の接合・固定などが whereas 硬くis defined as 1) harden(物を) 2) rigidize(材質などを) And 堅く seems to straddle both definitions: 1) firm 2) firmly 3) rigidly(態度が)〔【形】rigid〕 4) stiff 5) stiffly 6) stonily(人が石のように) 7) tight〈話〉 8) tightly My macintosh defines 固く • 硬く • 堅く as hard; [動かないようにしっかりと] firmly; [こわばって] stiffly; [すき問のないようにびっちりと] tight, tightly. Seems to me the most important entry, the dictionary root form, is the most important... might be two different entries (固く;堅く) and (硬く;堅く) and is missing. Not wanting to add anything until one of you thought about this. |

Also, it's compositional; 私 can be replaced by any pronoun. I'm in favour of dropping it. I've expanded the また entry so that it's easier to break down an expression like this. |

Comments: | That sounds like an issue with the text-glossing systems to me. These systems will supposedly also miss things like ハシった, アタった, ツブし た, ツブれた, all which have been in about as many tweets as ジコった the past week. I don't have any issue including katakana forms like this when they're reasonably common (a case could certainly be made for adding コケる to 転ける, for example), but when we're looking at a supposedly more slang-y form of the word and even the usage on twitter is less than 1% of the more common form, I don't think there's any real case for adding it. |
|
12. | A* 2020-04-22 01:45:08 Jim Breen <...address hidden...>
Comments: | It's a bit more than that. One of the roles of our entries is to enable text-glossing systems such as Rikai* and the WWWJDIC function. If I put some text from an example of usage of ジコる into the latter (猛スピードを出してジコった。) it matches on ジコチュー, which is quite wrong. I realise there are heaps of things which get katakanaized, and we can't put them all in, but I don't have a problem with these 体言+る versions if they have some currency. ジコる is marginal, as I said at the beginning, but I think it just gets over the line. |

Comments: | While those translations are fine in the context of a complete sentence, I don't think they're quite right for 危ういところ on its own. It means something like "dangerous situation". It's easier to translate with the で included. But there's also "危ういところを" (as in daijr's example). I note that we don't have an entry for 危ないところ(で), which is even more common. I've made an amendment to the 危うい entry and selected a couple of helpful example sentences. I think that should be sufficient. |

Comments: | I think it's a new term. It's getting plenty of use at the moment but pre-COVID-19 online results have nothing to do with viruses. Not sure how we want to handle it. It's one of those media buzzwords that will probably disappear as quickly as it appeared. "Mega cluster" gets plenty of coronavirus-related hits in English as well. I think the meaning is fairly obvious from its parts. We have entries for メガ and クラスター. |

Comments: | I'm not really sure whether we should call them slaves or not. The Economic Aspects of the History of the Civilization of Japan by Yosaburo Takekoshi (not sure what page, on Google Books) seems to call the 官戸 and all other 賤民 slaves, though daijs etc. don't. (our entry also just calls them "lowly people", though that's for a single sense encompassing 賤民 of all ages, not just during the ritsuryo) enwiki refers to some but not all of the 賤民 as slaves. I think it might be better to refer to this as a "caste of X" (whether it's slaves or citizen) rather than "X" |

Comments: | I don't really see the issue? It's a common, idiomatic expression not usually replaced by similar expressions with the same meaning. It describes a specific concept that exists both in Japan and in English-speaking countries. _ "customer thanks days" doesn't seem to be commonly used in English. (I get ca 1300 googits, eat least first 5 are all obviously Japan- related) _ It's not specifically for "loyal" customers. (i.e. the sales are not usually restricted only to loyal customers) |

Comments: | I think it'd be useful to have. I think asking "what use would it be?" speaks of a lack of imagination! A translator coming across this word might be happy to not have to look up what it's usually referred to as in English. |

Comments: | The refs only mention the ritsuryō system for ぬひ. There's a second more general sense. I think we should lead with ぬひ. It's more common (and the only form in meikyo). |
