Comments: | I think 翅 should be split out into a separate entry. It only applies to a specific use of sense 2. Likewise, 羽子 only applies to sense 5. Most of the kokugos don't even have はね as a reading for 羽子; it's just a "「羽子」とも書く" note in koj. Given that we have a 羽子/はご entry with the same meaning, I think we can take it out of the kanji field and move it to a note. |

Comments: | macadam seems to be just plainly incorrect. 砕石 is an ingredient, and that is all. 砕石 has innumerable other applications, and without tar/bitumen, it is not macadam. I can't imagine anyone would ever use 砕石 as a shorthand for asphalt. sankoku lists as suru intransitive. Even so, marked the [vs] form as rare, as it certainly seems uncommon (and looking at actual use cases, I'm still not entirely sure what is being communicated. In some cases, it might even be "the application of crushed stone" (to a lawn)". But anyway, don't hold me to that, I didn't look that hard. |

The above Sanseido article says that たにそこ is the original reading but most people now pronounce it たにぞこ ("現代の大勢も、まあ「たにぞこ」でしょう"). I have no reason to doubt that, but could it be that たにそこ is still considered more "correct" (e.g. in technical contexts)? Which reading does 日本語発音アクセント辞典 list first? I don't have access to that resource. |

Comments: | On further thought, I'm removing [sK] from 谷まる in favor of [rK]. It is "correct', and this form *does* appear in yourei, even in recent works. You can even find the off appearance in wikipedia. There is another recently added entry "進退これ谷まる". If we [sK] 谷 here, it will looks very strange for it to appear there. And if we go strictly off of statistics, there's an argument to [sK] 谷 out of the きわまる entry itself. Note: for statistical purposes, only 窮 and 谷 are actually considered analogous by Japanese people, so their relative statistics should probably not consider the more-common 極, which throws off a lot of numbers. |

Comments: | no dictionary entries for 窮, and yourei and google news are exclusively 進退窮, so I'm adding 極 as [sK], even though the statistics might otherwise be high enough to display it. 極 is well-represented on twitter though, so definitely worth at least the [sK]. sankoku suggests that 谷 and 窮 are "technically" interchangeable, but doesn't have a dedicated entry for this expression. |

Comments: | What about dropping 接続 notes entirely? They belong to grammars instead of dictionaries. Also, the kana-based traditional analysis is unnecessarily complicated. The term 未然形/imperfective form is ambiguous in case of godan and sahen verbs while the term "-nai stem" incorrectly selects the し form of sahen instead of さ required by れる. I would prefer phonological analyses like "godan -u → -areru (-wareru after vowel), ichidan -ru → -rareru, kuru → korareru, suru → sareru", but that's already in the conjugation tables |

Comments: | This entry seems absurdly rare, but in daijs, so feel free to discard this suggestion with little/no remarks. (I will understand the meaning :) Instead of an xref, would it be possible to just *add* 進退これ谷まる and 進退維谷まる as [sK] in 進退窮まる? They are entered as exact synonyms anyway. Then if you search for this term you'll get the right answer, at least. No one is going to learn this form from this dictionary and then try to apply it. (or, at least they shouldn't). Then, if desired, we could [sK] the 谷まる forms without leaving an inconsistency. (or leave them [rK], which I am still fine with). (Also, note: There is a far-more popular 4-character compound which we don't carry, same kanji, same meaning: しんたいいこく【進退維谷】. It's *extremely* common-looking in Chinese news sources, but not actually so much in Japanese, so I haven't made an effort to add it. Appears in 四字熟語辞典) |
