Comments: | I think I'll close it at this stage. We've had a ゼネラルコントラクター entry since 2005, and it gets ~200 in the n-grams. I see many of those are describing the source of ゼネコン as general contractor accompanied by the katakanan transcription, but a few are freestanding. That said, I can't really make a case for ゼネコン coming from ゼネラルコントラクター. I'll put a link from ゼネコン to here. |
|
13. | A* 2020-04-12 23:48:33 Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
Refs: | https://www.oreyume.com/column/otherwise/4204/ "ゼネコンとは、もともとは英単語の「General Contractor(ゼネラル・コントラクター)」が語源となった言葉です。" |
|
Comments: | The fact that no dictionary has an entry for ゼネラルコントラクター (or even mentions it) suggests that it was never an established term before ゼネコン came into existence. See how the above site explains the origin of the term. I don't think it's generally considered an abbreviation in Japanese. |
|
12. | A* 2020-04-11 05:00:57 Marcus Richert <...address hidden...>
Comments: | My bad. I think it'd be easier to just do the xref. I just don't find it very believable that "general contractor" made the jump from English into Japanese immediately as ゼネコン, and even 百歩譲って assuming it's true, it's such a minor, minor point and I don't see how it'd do any harm to call this an abbr and x-ref to ゼネラルコントラクター. |

Comments: | Thanks for the explanation. I don't have any objections to using the field tags to mean specific terminology or jargon rather than categorization, but until now I had no idea that was the intent. (I finally understand why タンク isn't [mil]). |
|
17. | A* 2022-06-02 00:45:24 Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
Comments: | We typically only use field tags for terminology (i.e. technical or special terms). So 積分 gets a math tag but 数学者 does not. It has been suggested in the past that we expand the use of field tags to include all field-related terms but I'm not sure there's much enthusiasm for that idea. I'm quite happy with the current policy, which mirrors that of the JEs and English dictionaries. Deciding what counts as "terminology" isn't an exact science, but simple A+B terms like 麻雀クラブ or 麻雀打ち wouldn't usually be tagged. |
|
16. | A* 2022-06-01 12:57:36 Stephen Kraus <...address hidden...>
Comments: | I thought the purpose of field tags was at least partially to serve as metadata. For example, you can search "#mahj" on jisho.org to bring up a list of all mahjong vocabulary. If we're going to remove tags because they look redundant, should we also remove the tag from 麻雀牌 ("mahjong tile"), 雀荘 ("mahjong parlour; mahjong parlor"), 雀卓 ("mahjong table"), etc? We're actually kind of inconsistent about this right now. In addition to 麻雀, similar entries like 麻雀打ち and 麻雀クラブ also don't have the tag. |
|

The compound word 拉致問題, which requires you to know *this* word, is [spec1] and thus marked "common" in jisho.org. I don't know how this wasn't swept up by one of the [news] collations... A bit baffled. So baffled, I went to archive.org to get the Mainichi Shinbun stats file. This term is ranked ~43,000 with 15 occurrences, presumably over 4 years. It is the only term that appears with the "拉" kanji at all. 誘拐 is ranked ~3500 with 1639 instances. Editorial policy of the newspaper in the late 90s? 拉致 seems common enough in news searches today. Just a sanity check, Google news "reports" (I know, I know...) "拉致された" 4920 hits "誘拐された" 5870 hits |

Comments: | Thanks for the explanations on your decision. And sorry for the long reply. I was just worried that if I didn't go into the whole thought process, it might seem like I was arguing for a very nit-picky thing, when really for me it's much more of a big-picture kind of question. With that in mind, I notice that no one has yet responded to the point I made about JMDICT being the data source for many Japanese language learning tools, and even if data may not reflect popularity (as in the example of "(wa) katakana at top"), it may still be worthwhile for the sake of documenting the language itself. All that said, I respect and accept your decision on this particular entry; but I'm still interested in hearing your thoughts/opinions about this more 'philosophical' point about how JMDICT should (or should not) attempt to support language learners, rather than just reflect current-day usage. Is such discussion appropriate in these comments or is there another/better way I can ask about this kind of thing? Jim, I'll look for your email address and try to email you. Thanks for the offer. [D'oh! I see it now at the top of the confirmation page.] |

Comments: | Thanks, Marcus. I think that covers it, and I'll close this off now. I don't mind having the kanji form shown on the basic forms (GG5 has 可き in the べき entry), but I do think it is inappropriate to have them in the virtually-always-kana expressions. Re この/此の/etc. I see Daijirin and GG5 have the 此の, but the other JEs don't. Marcus: I've added a GitHub issue for [rare] Rob: if you want to find out more about the n-grams, email me. They are not the counts you get from Google searches, which are almost useless. |

Comments: | The JEs often start their English glosses with short Japanese explanations of the context, etc. For its "-とは" entry GG5 begins sense 1 with "〔…と言うのは〕". I can see that the 3-page とは entry in the DAJG is really about senses 2-5 here, and that our sense 1 is rather like と言うのは (2) "as for ...; when it comes to ...; regarding ...; how about ...", but I don't think it's a reason to break up the entry, just at the kokugos and JEs don't break up their entties. In fact I wouldn't be as certain as M&T seem to be that sense 1 is always an abbreviation of というのは. An xref between them wouldn't hurt. I'll close this to shorten the queue, and reopen with a suggested xref. |
|
17. | A* 2020-09-17 04:57:47 Jim Rose <...address hidden...>
Comments: | I am not quite able to follow the logic. In the expression というのは, wouldn’t 「と」have been a 格助詞, and 「は」have been a 係助詞? So wouldn’t the abbreviated form still be a 格助詞「と」and a 係助詞「は」as in the original expression?. Anyway, the senses after [1] all fit together semantically. [1] is semantically alien. |
|
16. | A* 2020-09-17 02:05:24 Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
Comments: | > The issue is that sense [1] is the meaning of completely different homonym and an abbreviation of a special circumstance expression, and is not a compound particle at all Not according to the kokugos dictionaries. In daijr and daijs, sense 1 is under the same "格助詞「と」+係助詞「は」" heading as the other senses. > Do you have access to the reference I gave? I do. I'm just pointing out that other references don't support that assertion. The kokugos will almost always indicate if a term is an abbreviation but they do not in this case. |

Comments: | While those translations are fine in the context of a complete sentence, I don't think they're quite right for 危ういところ on its own. It means something like "dangerous situation". It's easier to translate with the で included. But there's also "危ういところを" (as in daijr's example). I note that we don't have an entry for 危ないところ(で), which is even more common. I've made an amendment to the 危うい entry and selected a couple of helpful example sentences. I think that should be sufficient. |

Comments: | I restored that gloss because: (a) it seemed justified by the reference in the 2020 submission (b) I couldn't see where you justified its removal (*) It's no big deal, and I'm happy to leave it off. (*) I need to point out that long and rambling comments and voluminous (and often not very relevant) references in these submissions are not a lot of help to the people trying to edit them, and often result in them being left until later. I, and I suspect others, would be helped if the comments and references were more focussed and succinct. |

Comments: | The sited GG5 glosses basically confirm what I added, and didn't say anything about surprise attacks. "perform a surprise attack" looks like a hand-written gloss at the time of the original submission, without any dictionary support or consideration of existing J-E translations (the forum was a discussion among Chinese and Japanese speakers). I'm not trying to be antagonistic about the addition of this entry (I wouldn't have found this term had it not been submitted), but it just seems like an inaccurate, and ultimately misleading gloss. |

Japan was in control of the game from the beginning. But the opponent caught Japan off guard and got one point. (NOTE: uses 一瞬の) Question about about the difference between this, and 隙を狙う (which we don't have, and maybe might add) https://hinative.com/questions/14408944 answer: yes, very similar. but 隙をつく…more short time ? 隙をつく 隙をねらう also we have a expression 「一瞬の隙をつく」 but both 隙をつくand 隙をねらう…are very similar, indeed. 一瞬 variant: 隙を突いて 21530 一瞬の隙を突いて 4310 隙を狙う 一瞬の隙を狙う 123 Kanji use(used て form because this dominates): 隙をついて 32909 57.3% 隙を突いて 21530 37.5% すきをついて 2248 3.9% すきを突いて 742 1.3% |

Comments: | new glosses are consistent with huixing's original Japanese definition, as well as various other online 和英 glosses (see references). Some carefully worded translations on reverso also morph this into "take advantage of the opportunity", but this leverages the surrounding context. "took advantage of the sudden vacuum in military forces in the capital created by Kiyomori's departure", where the "sudden lack of forces" is the opportunity/隙. (a gap in the usual defenses) "to take advantage of a lapse in security/attention/etc". Reverso has a particular tech example about "anyone being able to connect to your modem remotely, due to a lack of any firewall or network security". (the lack of security being the 隙). The て form n-grams dominate. I think this is the pre-amble to the actual attack, something like "having taken advantage of a moment of inattention.... [attack, sneak in, sneak out, steal their wallet]" Removed "someone" from "to catch someone off guard" just before posting. Can be a person, a cat, an army, a nation,... Moved the more-literal gloss to the first position, as it most closely aligns with the grammatical structure. (explain gap),その隙を突いて, or (gap qualifiersの)隙をついて。 The 一瞬の隙 version seems more clearly "a momentary lapse in attention..." "when the opponent dropped his guard for only a second..." ... maybe also consider adding 一瞬の隙を突く, 隙を狙う. |
