Comments: | In spite of having removed it myself, I've now seen a couple sources say that the "resign oneself to one's fate" is possible. Also searching 覚悟 + 諦め says there is a relationship there (also in the kokugos), but much to my surprise, 諦め is more strongly "accepting fate" than I expected. (and less, throwing in the towel because something is difficult). Apparently the initial meaning was from Buddhism, and this is given explicitly in daijs. Sankoku has simplified things way down from daijs 5 entries, and there seems to me to be quite a gap in the definitions there. sankoku[1] says nothing about buddhism, but seems to parallel the Buddhism sense. This seems rare by comparison in the wild (having googled usages for about an hour now). sankoku [2] is the combination of "decide" and "prepare" contained withing 心構え and 決心. This seems to me to match daijs[1], without the expansive treatise on danger... "Resignation" or something fate-related probably belongs. But I don't think it should all be in one gloss, and I think the kokugo divisions back that up. |

Comments: | Perhaps move "resolve" higher on the list than I have? Frieren(anime). 覚悟 comes up a lot, including 覚悟を決める, and it is always translated as "resolve". From my limited reading on this term, this seems to be a particularly apt translation. "resignation" seems off-the-mark. We currently have a translation for 覚悟を決める as "to prepare(for the worst)", which would align with "resignation", but I think this translation is also off. Japanese references give a description of something like "accepting the danger ahead and deciding to move forward", which is where this interpretation might have come from. But it looks like 覚悟 and 覚悟を決める generally have positive connotations "to decide to move forward in spite of the dangers or challenges". I'd honestly put "resolve" higher on the list, but I haven't researched this term so extensively as to make such a claim. eijiro has nothing like "resignation" in an extensive list of collocations. So if you don't have support to keep it, I'd recommend dropping. |

I propose dropping the "col" from sense 1. |

Comments: | Why over-complicate things? In porn, 熟女 generally refers to the woman in the porn, not the genre itself (which would be 熟女もの etc.). Just google 熟女+AV for a confirmation. I definitely don't see the need for 2 different senses here. MILF is the perfect translation for 熟女 in many cases, while somehwat inappropriate in others. That doesn't mean it shouldn't be included as a gloss. No one gloss fits every usage. Stylistically it's probably on point more often than it's not. |

|
Comments: | It's obviously not a term to be used in polite conversation but it isn't nearly as slangy as "MILF". I have encountered 熟女 in books where "MILF" would definitely not be an appropriate translation. The term has come to refer to an entire genre of porn (which probably deserves its own sense). I don't think "cougar" works. |

Comments: | The English word "MILF" itself doesn't really imply that somebody necessarily wants to have sex with somebody. The Google dictionary for example suggests: "a sexually attractive older woman, typically one who has children." The Oxford English Dictionary defines the term as "an attractive and stylish young mother" (according to enwiki, whose own definition on the other hand doesn't mention motherhood). Cambridge.org suggests "a sexually attractive woman who is a mother". Notably nobody seems to be defining it as "a mother who the speaker, by using this word to describe them, is indicating a desire to have sex with", so the word obviously has a meaning beyond what's implied by spelling out the acronym. I don't think 2 different senses are called for. It's not as if "MILF" is exclusively used in porn contexts in English. A "MILF" and a "sexually attractive woman" both seem to refer to the same two things, in most cases. That a "sexually attractive older woman" appears in an X-rated movie doesn't meaningfully change the meaning of the word used to describe her. We don't split おっぱい in this way, for example. I also think the word is always [col], bordering on [vulg], whether in a porn context or not. native informer, Osakan in her 30's: "ちょっと下ネタ的なニュアンス が感じられる" |
