You will not find a single dictionary that says that this corresponds to "padre". You will get a note that says 《父・神父の意の、〈ポルトガル〉padreから》and similar.

Compared with terms that actually come directly from portuguese such as イルマン:
イルマン(〈ポルトガル〉irmão)

Thanks for tackling this. Good luck with the sentences - 800+ of them. Obviously we only need samples, and most only apply to the early senses.

You're correct. I note that the JE dictionaries favour transitive glosses (in the active voice), probably because the passive voice can sound awkward and is less helpful for translations. e.g. "このびんには2リットル入る" is better translated as "This bottle holds two litres" than as "Two litres can be held in this bottle". But I support the change. I've amended the "obtain" sense as well.
Added some more senses.
I don't think we need a separate sense for "break into".
I'll reindex the sentences if this is approved.

From what I understand, sense 4 seems "backwards" - the most common definitions of "contain", "hold", and "accommodate" are transitive, but "入る" is listed as intransitive. The examples I have seen other dictionaries use to explain this sense all seem to point to a passive definition, where the subject is the item being "contained". I suspect sense 7 has the same issue, but I couldn't find examples online in English and my Japanese is poor.

Yes, but I think the entry is rather over merged. 刺青 is mainly read しせい, with いれずみ as a gikun reading; just as 文身 is really ぶんしん, etc.
I think this should be broken into 4 entries. I know it's convenient to have the いれずみ/tattoo entry in one place but it's ended up a mess. If others agree I will do the split.

I think it's odd having the kanji for よよ (代々 and 世々) split across two entries. I suggest dropping よよ from here, adding 代々 to 2843316 (世々/よよ), and splitting out せいせい/せぜ/せせ from 世々/よよ into a separate entry (or multiple separate entries). According to the kokugos, only だいだい and よよ are adverbial. I'm happy to set it up myself.

いい顔(を)する can mean more than one thing, but most frequently I think it means "to suck up" or "trying to make a good
impression" in things like
https://detail.chiebukuro.yahoo.co.jp/qa/question_detail/q1012361025
"男性の前でいい顔して、裏でひどく性格の悪い女。対処方法。知恵をかして下さい。"
I mean it's "sympathetic attitude" as in sense 3 but it's very negative. While in いい顔をしない (also an example of
sense 3 and an entry on its own in daij) the いい顔 would have been a positive thing. I feel like this should be an
additional sense, maybe?

I think set phrases like this are useful

it seems to be a bit of a set phrase, but i wonder if this is true of all X+NOT_Xのほど

if it's kept, it doesn't mean "whether it's true or not", it means "the extent to which [something is] true or false". because the translation is not particularly idiomatic and obvious/literal, i'd be inclined to delete it

On the other hand, it's been there for nearly 20 years, it's reasonably common, it's in 2 Tanaka sentences, several GG5 examples, Eijiro, Readers+, etc. While we might not add it now, I don't really think it needs to be removed.
Since Robin and I tend to be on contrasting sides of this sort of discussion I'd be interested in what others think too.

  Comments:
i'm not saying we necessarily to change/delete this but i'd argue that almost all of the entries we have like ずにはおかない, ないではおかない are the kind of entries we used to let in but which are inconsistent with our current 'style'.

since ずには置かない gets the parsing wrong (it's [[[[X+ず]に]は]置かない], not X+[ずには置かない]), it seems like our current style would suggest that we should have an entry for 置かない with a note on usage or just mention it in the entry for 置く

If I saw it with just the gloss, I'd think "where did that come from?". With the "from 急にボールが来たので" I'd feel I had enough information. The extra bit about Atsushi Yanagisawa doesn't add much for me. If I wanted to find that out I'd go Googling, but I probably wouldn't bother.

「責(せめ)を負う」と言います。
「責(せき)を負う」とは言いません。

http://rivast.cocolog-nifty.com/blog/2007/06/post_482d.html
2.責:せめ ×せき
 意味は「責任」ですが、「責」の一字の場合は「せめ」と読みます。
 例)「……損害賠償の責を負うものとする。」

https://twitter.com/StarfuryMk1/status/485491955002929152
クルーテオ伯爵のセリフで、恐らく「責を負う」の部分が「せきをおう」になってましたよ。この場合は「せめ」が正解で「せき」とは読みません。

http://www.tahara-kantei.com/column/column265.html
同じく法律用語の「責を負う」を、法律家が、「せきをおう」と読んでいたら笑われるであろう。
 (「せめをおう」と読むのである。)
  Comments:
Sorry I was unclear--I meant to say that I think 責を負う is the same as 責めを負う in both reading and meaning.

Yes, "unclass" for now. We need a "character" class, or equivalent.
2. A* 2020-02-18 00:35:37  Robin Scott <...address hidden...>

This belongs in the names dictionary.
FYI, デジタル大辞泉プラス is a dictionary of proper nouns and fictional characters, etc. This isn't found in the regular daijisen.
What tag do we use for this, Jim?
