Comments: | There's another meaning to 体験 not covered in most dictionaries, in things like "手作り体験", "そば打ち体験", where it means "to try out something". Sure, it's an experience, but I feel there's probably a better way of translating this, though the words elude me right now... it's a tryout in the sense that it's "Trying something to find out about it.", but not as in "A test of the suitability of a performer" (from Google's own dictionary). It's really a demonstration (that you get to take part in)...? |

6. | A* 2020-02-10 05:06:28 Rene Malenfant <...address hidden...>
Comments: | plus that line of editorial policy is designed to justify the inclusion of some less-than-dictionary-like japanese headwords for the purpose of E-J lookups. but if the english is also not the kind of thing that you'd find in a dictionary or expect someone to search for, then it doesn't really apply. and i can't imagine many people searching for this in english using those phrases. i don't think this or のできる is needed. this should be part of an example sentence. |
5. | A* 2020-02-09 16:14:56 Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
Comments: | I don't like that line of the editorial policy. I think it can be used to justify adding almost any common expression. After all, Japanese and English are very different languages. And how proficient is "reasonably proficient"? There's always going to be a most common way of expressing a certain idea. I don't think that alone is justification for inclusion. Given that this is literal and wouldn't be useful for EJ lookups, I don't think it's needed. I'd prefer having it as an example sentence for 行列 (as in GG5). I agree that のできる shouldn't be an entry. |
4. | A* 2020-02-09 07:30:54 Marcus Richert <...address hidden...>
Comments: | Let me attempt to make a better case for it's inclusion. If you look up "line" in eijiro's wa-ei you'll find "9. 列、行列、連続したものの線、並び" Chujiten has: "3可算名詞 列: a(連続したものの)線,並び; 《主に米国で用いられる》 (順番を待つ)行列 (《主に英国で用いられる》 queue)." if you look up the ngrams for various ways of expressing this same or a similar thing: 行列のできる店 24753 並ばないと入れない店 59 並ばないといけない店 21 列のできる店 31 Though they're all grammatical, only one of these is an example of natural, idiomatic language. I think there's a case for including this per this bit in the editorial policy: "is it not what someone reasonably proficient in Japanese would come up with when trying to express the English meaning in Japanese?" I don't think のできる should be an entry, though. That'd be akin to having a "のいい" entry, I think. |

Refs: | 行列 2915012 のできる 3731719 の出来る 1136527 GG5; 行列のできる店 a popular 《noodle》 shop where lines form |
Comments: | I feel it's a bit obvious. We don't have a single entry containing のできる, although GG5's examples have heaps that use it. Maybe there's a case for a "のできる" entry? |

Comments: | I'm certainly seeing hits for these キラキラネーム, but they mostly seem to be pets, toys, manga characters, etc.. I was inclined to wave them through - after all there are quite a lot of dubious scrapings in that name file, and weird kids' names abound in other languages. However, if we want to push back, that's OK with me. We can ask for real examples rather than accept what's on the page. |
