Comments: | I still prefer to have more glosses, partly because this data is being used in a reverse direction, so a reasonable spread of terms is appropriate. The meanings do fairly cleanly break into two groupings - spatial and temporal and the fact that English uses the same term for both doesn't stop it being two senses. |

Comments: | The anonymous contributor is correct. I think that it would be totally reasonable to gloss this simply as “long” and nothing else, because 長い can be used with anything. The way this is written may be misleading to users who might think that they can’t use it to say “long hair”, for example. “lengthy” and “protracted” don’t quite fit. “lengthy” gives a sense of extensive length. Wisdom translates it as 長く続く; 長すぎる. Even though it’s entry also has “lengthy” as a gloss, it’s only used to make the English example sentences sound a bit more natural. I don’t think it’s necessary and I think it’s better to direct users to a word that can a connotation of “too long” in Japanese. “protracted” means prolonged or extended, and Wisdom translates it as 長引く, 長期化した, and it isn’t mentioned in the entry for 長い. |

Comments: | I see some refs which describe jukujikun as kun readings of established kanji compounds (from Chinese; e.g. 昨日・きのう, 今朝・けさ) as opposed to words which acquired novel kanji representations (流石・さすが, 一寸・ちょっと, 麦酒・ビール). They consider the latter group to be ateji. I guess it's probably best to continue using the [ateji] tag only in the narrow sense. Definitely less confusing. |
|
17. | A 2024-02-26 23:59:49 Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
Comments: | 当て字 in the broad sense of the word includes 熟字訓. Meikyo and Wiktionary have it as a second sense. |
|
16. | A 2024-02-25 10:43:06 Jim Breen <...address hidden...>
Comments: | Quite a few references conflate ateji and gikun. Our ateji tag was added in 2009, based on some kokugos. |

Refs: | Refs say the 流石 kanji form derives from kanbun: 枕流漱石(流れに枕し石に漱ぐ). Daijirin has a long note explaining how the word itself originated from a combination of the adverb さ, the verb suffix す, and the particle がに. Several kokugos (daijirin, iwakoku, smk) refer to 流石 as "当て字" or "借字", which doesn't make any sense to me. Those references also have 流石 marked with their usual jukujikun symbols. |
|
Comments: | I feel like [ateji] here is inconsistent with how we normally use the tag. As far as I can tell, there's no phonetic connection to these kanji. |

Comments: | Here is more of that article. The author is writing about his time studying in the California in the 1970s. He seems to be using the word in the sense of a specialist who helped students with diagrams/charts for their theses. Somewhat like daijr's second meaning. デービス校ではスコットランド系のスミス教授のところに1年間お世話になる。驚いたのは研究のやり方がシステマティックで「論文製造工場」になっていたことだ。...私が拙い英語で書いた草稿は、スミス教授が一晩でほぼ全文修正する。それを、内容が間違っていないか私がチェックする。もちろん一晩だ。教授秘書がタイプで清書する。図面も専門の図師がいた。 |
