Comments: | Yes, the kokugos are unanimous that it's "ラテン", and they're all wrong, just as some of them are wrong saying アナナス is Latin. It's from Tupi-Guarani via Portuguese. I think it got into Japanese via English (Gakken agrees), but if we really need an lsrc, probably "por" is best (as we have with アナナス.) (Merriam Webster calls it "New Latin", by which it means the Latinized creations used in "scientific description and classification". IMNSHO that doesn't make it Latin at all.) In this part of the world blue jacaranda (Jacaranda mimosifolia) is flowering all over the place. |
