Refs: | daijr: (「で」を伴って)特に恩恵を受けていなくても,漠然とした感謝の気持ちを表す語。ありがたいことに。多く挨拶の語として用いる。「―で無事に帰って参りました」「『御両親は御健在ですか』『はい,―で』」 daijs: 「おかげ」をさらに敬っていう語。「すべて神様の―と感謝する」 |
|
Comments: | I thought "grace of God" more or less covered covered daijr's sense 2 (where you express gratitude for some situation or result that didn't involve someone else's help or efforts), but on reflection, there's nothing inherently religious about "おかげさまで無事に帰って参りました". I'm not sure what the right approach is here. Probably best to drop the おかげさまで x-ref from the "grace (of God)" sense and instead just treat it as an extra-polite form of the equivalent おかげ sense (as in daijs). |

Comments: | I'll flag the issue with that sentence in the Tatoeba forum, and drop the sentence from the main example for sense 3. I'll also add an alternative sense 3 example. |
|
7. | A* 2020-11-26 20:59:14
Comments: | the japanese sentence was 愛すればこそ彼女と結婚したかった before it was changed mistakenly. this can be seen from the tatoeba logs. if you change it back, you only need to add an english translation to it. "It was because I loved her that I wished to marry her." |
|
6. | A* 2020-11-26 17:33:37 Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
Refs: | 愛すればこそ彼女と結婚しなかった。 I didn't marry her because I loved her. |
|
Comments: | I believe the sense 3 sentence is a mistranslation. (To me, at least) the English is saying "Love wasn't the reason I married her" whereas the Japanese means "It was because I loved her that I didn't marry" (which doesn't make much sense). Presumably the English sentence is the original, so the Japanese would need to be changed (preferably by a native speaker). A pity we'll lose an example for sense 3, though. Could we add another one? Something like "君の将来を思えばこそこう言ってるんだ。It's because I'm thinking of your future that I'm saying this." (adapted from a GG5 example) I found and indexed an sentence for sense 2 (彼は年こそ若いが十分その仕事をやっていける。Young as he is, he is equal to the task. ) |

Comments: | I suspect this is actually referring to the Kanjidic entry. For some reason it has いき as the 訓読み, which is wrong. |

Comments: | GG5 has "a summer cypress; Kochia scoparia." AFAICT it's really another name for Bassia scoparia. (GG5 often has old or muddled names for species.) |
