Comments: | Nobody else splits "paternal blood;lineage" from "progeny" and some even have "sperm" in with one or two of those meanings but I thought it would be weird to combine them all. But maybe somebody else can come up with something better that works with just 2 senses. the "cause/source" sense ended up being moved from 4 to 5 - I tried my best to keep it as it was but since I think the 3 closely related senses (3,4,5) should come together, I had to nudge it. (but if somebody else can reduce 3,4,5 to 2 senses instead of 3, it won't move). I removed "kind, variety, quality, tone" glosses that were in sense 1entirely, not really sure where they came from. |

Comments: | I've added an extra sense which is in all the kokugos and prog. GG5 merges it with sense 1. Merged senses 2 and 5 into what is now sense 4. This is how the kokugos do it. I don't think there's a need to split. I'll index the sentences if this is approved. |

Comments: | Well that wasn't my recollection. We discussed it in Sep/Oct last year, and I updated the Editorial Guidelines after that. See: http://www.edrdg.org/wiki/index.php/Editorial_policy#General "on occasions the usual translation may be a bit opaque, and a more complete explanation would be helpful. In this case add a more explanatory gloss with "[expl]" in front of it. Keep these to a minimum (it's a dictionary; not an encyclopedia.) The "[expl]" tag is usually not used if it is the only gloss in the sense. " The reason for the "expl" was distinguish between glosses that were translations Since in this case "Koi-Koi" gets an English Wikipedia page, we can probably make that a gloss, and then an "expl" tag is appropriate. |

Comments: | Does the book say it's pronounced びけ? I see Takashi Ebashi gives the pronunciation for the same kanji as "Biki" here (based on Spencer Palmer's 1891 "Hana-awase" essay) https://japanplayingcardmuseum.com/6-3-8-0- henry-spencer-palmer/ Also given as "ビキ” here: http://puzzlehouse.travel.coocan.jp/PH/kg109/k g109.html and as "びーき" in 新言海 (1959, on google books) and there's also a "collected works of Miyatake Gaikotsu" book on google which gives its as "びき" and suggests "引" as an alternative kanji. jpwiki's hanafuda article also has "ビキ 札を合わせる段階で3番目の人。古くは「大引(おおびき)」 と言った。" The only connection I can find online between びけ and 尾季 is this snippet on google books: "おーびけ C大引]骨牌手合の最終の人にて「尾季」" (隠語 辞典集成, 1996) おーびけ C大引]骨牌手合の最終の人にて「尾季」 Maybe 尾季/びき should be a separate entry? (I know George through our common interest in hanafuda and suggested to him to add words that aren't already in the dictionary) |

Comments: | There are some sources on the internet that write it as 蒐場 but I don't think that's correct. 蒐 is an old kanji for atsumeru (to collect, gather). The etymology of nuta seems to be related to numa(ta). There's also nutaunagi ぬたうなぎ【沼田鰻】 which is a type of hagfish. Fun fact: the act of splashing in a mud pit is called nutautsu (already an entry) which is the origin (or is the sibling of) notautsu (!). This was a new revelation to me ;) |
