Jitsuyo doesn't say it's not a photo, only that it often refers to images that aren't photos of the real thing. It gives photos used in advertising as examples of イメージ画像.
There might be two senses here but I don't think it refers specifically to image *files*. In the article above, the イメージ画像 are just Google image results. I think イメージ画像 are always viewed via a digital medium, though. A real-life painting or drawing wouldn't be an イメージ画像 (unless it was scanned).

"Themself" looks odd to me. I never see it formal writing (and rarely in informal writing). This is actually a penalty specifically for samurai so "himself" isn't wrong, but I suggest rewording it.

To be clear, what I meant by "real word" is one that has seen real use outside of fiction (such as the TV show mentioned).

There raises the topic of what is a real word. 
忍耐弱い isn’t a “real” word according to many Japanese.
I don’t know of a dictionary that lists it.  And yet... 
it’s widely used as the antonym to 忍耐強い instead of the proper 気の短い
As a word limited to the world of 花柳界, 浮名儲け was never widely used.
But for people in 花柳界, it was a “real” word.

Twitter wouldn’t be a metric for a word that perhaps should be marked archaic. 
The second google hit calls 浮名儲け:  絶滅危惧言葉
