Refs: | The youtube clip wouldn't run. https://tachiai.org/2019/10/02/whats-all-the-commotion-part-2-matchmaking/ - "If the gyoji deems the bout to be properly started, he will shout out hakkeyoi. Experienced rikishi who are in doubt if the situation is matta or not (e.g. if the opponent is not properly engaging), will listen for that “hakkeyoi” for a confirmation that they should not let down their guards." and later "If the rikishi go into a stalemate – which usually happens in a yotsu battle, as pushing-thrusting bouts tend to quickly resolve one way or the other, the gyoji will stop the “nokotta” and instead urge them to renew action, by shouting “hakkeyoi” again." |
|
Comments: | So according to the tachiai.org page it's used to get them going again when they stop AND at the start to get them moving in the first place. I really don't want to stray far from what all the references are saying. Maybe the extension to the note is enough. |

Comments: | I just picked a random Sumo match to demonstrate that this definition is fundamentally inadequate. It really doesn’t matter which match you observe, the Gyoji will shout はっけよい the instant the 立ち合い is successful. In the initial usage, it has nothing to do with the rikishi becoming motionless. If you watch this video, or any one of thousands of others, the minute the combatants make contact without triggering a false start, the Gyoji belts it out. |

Comments: | I can't find any specific equivalent sound in English, so I just describe it as a "horn sound". You can hear from the sound effect clip (reference #1) that パフ is used to represent the horn sound that plays twice. If you look up ドンドンパフパフ (the name of the clip), you can see multiple other places referring to this specific combination of sound (widespread enough for there to be a chiebukuro question about it as reference #2) The fact this represents the sound of a horn is also confirmed by source #3 where the video explains パフ represents the sound of a ラッパ (in this case, meaning a horn) Since I can't seem to find パフ in any JP dictionary, I thought it might be limited to this specific ドンドンパフパフ sound effect usage. However, you can tell from video #4 that a the person instinctively mimics the sound of the horn by saying パフ herself |
