I don't think it's necessary to split sense 3. It's not unusual to have glosses with different connotations for the same sense.
影 is commonly used for senses 2-4 (but probably less so in edited prose). I suggest either adding 影 as an iK form or adding those senses to the 影 entry with a "non-standard; usu. written as 陰" note.

  Comments:
WRT adding 影 as sK, I think that obscures the fact that the alignment with 陰 is really just sense 1. Maybe an xref to/from sense 1 of 1590145 would be better.
For sense 3, I think the "behind someone's back" can stay. This dictionary is really for people coming *from* Japanese and the nuance should be clear.
6. A* 2023-05-07 17:16:28  Brian Krznarich <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
Just encountered the "behind the scenes"/"in the background" in 陰ながら応援, and most terms using this seem to carry a fairly positive nuance.

Any chance of splitting out, and/or relocating "behind someone's back" from sense[3]? I understand that these are from one single sense in Japanese ("from a place not physically visible to the target"). But certainly in English these are different senses(behind someone's back being idiomatic with a harshly negative nuance). It feels very odd to see them side-by-side, and I suspect it would be misleading for a non-native-English user to see them this way. "behind someone's back" also suggest that the target is not aware of what is happening, but this isn't necessarily the case (and often isn't the case) with "background" or "behind the scenes" uses.

Equal parts support and slander:
陰で悪口	2814	26.9%
影で悪口	2540	24.3%
陰で応援	2073	19.8%
影で応援	3021	28.9%

I didn't make any actual changes myself, because it seems a fair number of sentences would have to be corrected to match up with such a change...

I stuck 影 as [sK] here, as plenty of expressions using these senses will be written with this kanji, whatever is prescriptively correct. It's really quite a jumble. (I've seen Japanese articles saying "some people write with 影, but that's wrong, they should use 陰". This only appears, of course, because 影 is used all the time... see, for example:
陰ながら応援	98285	68.5%
影ながら応援	45211	31.5% <- that's a bit much to dismiss.

Not sure what we should do about it, but it would be odd of use to not record such a prevalent usage.

publish it online. But look at the Fox

Brian, please, several members of the editorial team have repeatedly asked you to be more brief in your edit summaries. I'm not reading what you wrote this time but rejecting it based only on the quality of the edit itself. We don't include long notes like the one you've suggested on individual English glosses, and while it's true we have several entries mentioning 2ch that should probably be updated, but 2ch as a site doesn't exist under that name any longer, and has splintered as well into more than 1 site IIRC.

summerfag (4chan slang)

Marcus's original ref("esp. 4chan"):
https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/summerfag
(Internet slang, derogatory) A new, inexperienced, and presumably teenage user who joins an online community (especially 4chan) during the American school holidays at summer

https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/summerfag
Summerfag is a term used by users on the site 4chan as underage users who post on 4chan instead of going to school. The term is often used as a scapegoat for bad posts, especially in highly populated boards such as /b/.

Does ‘summer Reddit’ really exist?
https://www.reddit.com/r/TheoryOfReddit/comments/8q9jvg/does_summer_reddit_really_exist/
Came from 4chan. Another way for users to show superiority & differentiate themselves from one another; “ I’m an oldfag, you’re just some summerfag “ another one I’ve heard a lot is “sure is summer in here. I’m sure there’s some truth to it, but is probably blown out of proportion. I don’t think the number of users grows THAT much

This post is 6 years old now
https://www.quora.com/How-is-2chan-and-4chan-different
4chan is English and 2chan is Japanese. Moot founded 4chan 14 years ago, he also owned it for a long period of time until he resigned from his position and later on 4chan was bought by Hiroyuki Nishimura, the founder of 2chan(Futaba Channel) in which 4chan was based on.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2channel
2channel and its successors are more controversial than other social media in Japan;[5] they are extremely popular among Japan's extreme right-wing, known as the netto-uyoku, who post xenophobic comments, often targeting Koreans.[9][6] Defamation is of particular concern; by August 2008, Nishimura had received more than one hundred lawsuits for defamatory comments left on the website.[11] Announcements of crimes also have drawn scrutiny towards 2channel and its successors.[13][17][18][19] In 2012, 2channel was accused by the Tokyo Metropolitan Police of allowing its platform to be used by amphetamine dealers,[20] although no charges were filed.[13]

In September 2007, 2channel averaged over 2.4 million posts per day.[21][c] As of July 2020, 5channel had 1,031 boards receiving around 2.7 million posts per day on weekends,[22] with no growth since March 2016.[23][c] Meanwhile, 2ch.sc then had 826 boards receiving around 5,700 posts daily.[24][c]
  Comments:
Opening note: 夏厨, while seeming to have originated in the Japanese 2channel/2chan/2ch community, appears to be in more broad use then "summerfag" is in English, probably because it is inherently less offensive. "summerfag" is largely restricted to a single website/community(4chan.org). Outside of participation in, or discussion of, the website 4chan.org(and some derivatives, I guess), "summerfag" is not an appropriate gloss, and risks being inadvertently both hyper-offensive and not-understood. Unfortunately, I know of no other good English glosses, besides an [expl].

My first ref is an academic text that indexes it as "summerfag (4chan slang)".

See also, for example:
site:twitter.com "summerfag"
vs.
site:reddit.com "summerfag"

Twitter returns almost nothing. Reddit returns lots of results, almost entirely 4chan-related groups. I have included the first non-4chan reddit response, and it was a commenter referencing 4chan.

Then compare with the Japanese term below, which has thousands of hits on twitter (I've removed the username 夏厨系 from searches...):
site:twitter.com 夏厨 -夏厨系

Clearly not the same in tenor. It seems it could even be used light-heartedly in Japanese, and may even be used in the cooking/kitchen sense of 厨. "a cook for the summer". (maybe a sense[2], not sure)

The respective communities (2chan and 4chan) are large enough that I think keeping this entry has merit, but at the same time this use of "fag" without very-relevant provisos is a problem. (this single entry was used to justify the addition of "fag" to the entry 厨, and I'm not so sure that's consistent with the general strength of 厨 in Japanese)

One of the ~6 twitter results, for example, is Japanese and shares an exciting English discovery about "fag". We don't seem to be their source, but this is the kind of thing I thing I would like to see us take more consideration of.

Again, we don't include notes like the one suggested that are usage notes on the English gloss rather than the Japanese word. The point I was making about 2ch is that it's splintered into 5ch and a new 2ch (at a different url from the original) which apparently isn't half as popular as 5ch,so it doesn't really make sense to speak about 2ch any longer.
Please, don't resubmit basically the same edit upon rejection accompanied by another wall of text.

One ref to confirm at least "esp. 4chan". Having looked, I'd say "uncommon outside" is a fair appraisal.
https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/summerfag
(Internet slang, derogatory) A new, inexperienced, and presumably teenage user who joins an online community (especially 4chan) during the American school holidays at summer

Original ref. in 2018 was to "2ch slang". This seems essentially correct.
  Comments:
Thank you for the feedback Marcus. I have definitely gotten comments over time, which I certainly would not deny. Very recent comments, outside of one notable one, I have not caught up with yet. So if there is a flood of perturbed messages, I just haven't seen those yet. That's on me.

Because "fag" is a touchy term that risks offense (why I was trying to edit), I'll try again with something brief: "summerfag" is a term limited to a specific community, 4chan, which has a practice of appending "fag" to a lot of terms. The ref gives 20+ examples. ie.
newfag (new member)
oldfag (long-time member)
samefag (someone who replies to their own posts anonymously)
....

These are generally limited to this community, and not a reflection of general English or even general [net-sl]. This is [4chan-sl]. 夏厨 seems quite a bit more common in general use outside of 2channel than "summerfag" outside of 4chan. Since "fag" risks extreme offense, and since "summerfag" is not well known outside of a specific community, I think warning flags are appropriate.

2ch/2chan/2channel, whatever. Googling "2channel" will work. I didn't realize this was in other entries, any version is fine with me.

The kokugos actually have separate entries for the four in a Buddhist context, with 「-生」 read as 「しょう」.
The meanings seem to be mostly the same, but with 「湿生」 related to moisture and 「化生」 as more of a
spontaneous birth (same as gg5).

Also, while the glosses are mostly how gg5 and DDB approach them, scientific terms are strange fits for
religious classifications (the fourth one especially is supernatural). "Hydrarch" is an obscure term that
seems to do with ecological succession. Here's how I would do it, but I don't mind ceding to gg5 if you feel
it's better.

  Comments:
The 略体/旧字 relationship between 當 and 当 is well documented - it's in Kanjidic, UniHan, lots of kanwas, etc. The point is that while it may be used in some old texts 當てる is so rare in modern Japanese that no kokugo I have checked records it as an equivalent of 当てる. I think it would be a mistake to add 旧字 variants to terms with them either being in kokugos or being used in context in current writing. We took a bit of a stand splitting up あてる and I don't think it's appropriate to add an almost never-used variant to such a common entry as 当てる.

"当" is apparently "略体" of "當". it seems pretty common overall in older texts: here's a showa 9 example of 当期 as 當期
https://dl.ndl.go.jp/info:ndljp/pid/1466299/354
If we want to include it, it should maybe not be split out, but I don't know, do we have a clear policy on when to include 旧字 and not?
