Comments: | I'm going to reopen this. There's a big difference between being a 1) nobleman - a person part of the nobility who in most cases held little power, and 2) being a "powerful Japanese feudal lord" who "ruled most of Japan from their vast, hereditary land holdings" (enwiki). The meaning is different enough to qualify splitting in both Japanese and English. If the two meanings in English look too similar, that can be handled by making them more different This isn't some obscure little historical issue but the word is used with both meanings today. If somebody looked up the use of "tonosama" in hyakunin isshu decks (for one example of contemporary use of the word in the Heian sense meaning) and walked away with the understanding that the "tonosama" cards of those decks depict "powerful feudal lords", then we've done them a disservice. |

Comments: | I'm not sure this needs to be an entry. It's commonly used with する, which makes it a regular A+B construction, and our second sense of 激しい is "extreme; intense; fierce; strong". Judging by recent usage, it's just colloquial, not slang. Also, the gloss "strong agreement" suggests that it's a noun phrase, but without する it's an exclamation ("I strongly agree!"); with する it means "to strongly agree". Given the 激しい and 同意 entries, I don't think this is especially useful. |

Comments: | I don't have a problem with well-attested rkb terms being included. I think the dictionary is broad enough to include even the more isolated "dialects". A couple of comments: - this is not an i-adjective. I've made it adj-f for want of anything more appropriate. - I know the source just referred to 3 adjectives, but xrefs need to be more focused than that. |

Comments: | this has been sitting for a couple of weeks, so i'm going to re-close. i agree with Robin, but AFAIK we don't really have any standard for including/excluding. it's a matter for the mailing list, perhaps. if we decide to exclude them, it'll be easy enough to round up the ones we don't want. |
|
6. | A* 2020-01-08 22:34:05 Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
Comments: | I'm not opposed to adding Okinawan terms (including this one) but I think that as a matter of good practice, links to online dialect dictionaries should be supported by evidence of usage (e.g. n-gram counts). 沖縄方言 differs from most other 方言 in that it is not mutually intelligible with standard Japanese. Linguists consider it a separate language. Of course, the main language spoken in Okinawa today is Japanese, not Okinawan, so we really only want to consider the Okinawan terms that have been adopted by Japanese speakers in Okinawa. |

Comments: | I don't think mainland speakers need to know these expressions. They're part of regional dialects, and precisely because of that it's unlikely they'll be well-known. If we held that as a standard, I'm sure a considerable part of 方言 in jmdict would need to go too. |
|
3. | A* 2020-01-06 21:51:45 Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
Comments: | 沖縄方言 is really a separate language so I think we need evidence that these words are known to and used by mainland speakers if we're to include them. |

Comments: | The first link is the article I mentioned. In the second link, it appears that the writer has coined 雷雪 on the spot. I wouldn't say it's an example of "thundersnow". 雷雪 does not appear in the third link. In the fourth link, 雷雪 is only used to explain the meaning of サンダースノー. --- A Google news search returns zero relevant results (besides that Logmi article). The Wikipedia article provides no references that contain "雷雪". Even to be described as "obscure", I think we need more evidence that this term is actually used in Japanese. |
