Comments: | It's an English grammatical rule that "both" becomes "either" in negative sentences. But in Japanese, there's no such rule. "私はそのふたごのどちらも知らない" literally means "I don't know both of those twins." It's only one sense in Japanese, but if we want to include "either", we'd have to do something like this. |

Comments: | This isn't two senses. どちらも means "both" (両方とも). In English, there are contexts where "both" and "either" are more or less interchangeable, but どちらも doesn't have the "one or the other of two things" meaning. GG5 does have "either" as a gloss but perhaps we should leave it out to avoid confusion. Meiyko gives the PoS as 連語. |

Comments: | Either way, it's a mess. Best left as it is. I see there are no example sentences using 切り. There are 5 with きり linked here, and they are for senses 7 and 8. I see GG5 has all its examples with just きり. A possible [uk]? |
|
21. | A* 2022-07-19 10:38:01 Robin Scott <...address hidden...> | |
Comments: | Merging with っきり would break the 2/3 rule. But we could still have a separate きり/ぎり entry for those senses. |

Comments: | What opencooper was saying is that "isekai" in English doesn't refer to the actual "other world" as much as it refers to the genre of works that take place in them. I don't think adding "(genre)" is helpful because I don't think it's clear that it should be read as "this English gloss mainly applies to the genre dealing with works taking place in another world" but will instead be interpreted as "異世界 refers to a genre". I'm sure opencooper is correct but I'm assuming "isekai" can have both meanings in English i.e. 1) genre dealing w 異世界, 2) 異世界, and since it's at the bottom of the list, I think this entry is probably fine as-is. |

However, I agree with Marcus that 笑 should remain as a headword. We lose the わら reading if it's dropped from here. The same applies to w. I think 笑 should come before w. It must be the more common form overall. Finally, I wouldn't call this an abbreviation. 笑 and 笑い are used differently. |

Comments: | With Jean-Luc's welcome assistance we've now got downstream processing going for this character type - it can't go into the legacy EUC files but should be OK in the UTF8 ones. However, I'm now having doubts about whether the entry is correct. When I Google for "あ゙ー" I get a lot of hits but for "あ゛ー", i.e. for the version with a non-combining ゛. It seems like that's the actual version out there. Maybe I should make this entry have both あ゙ー and あ゛ー? |

Comments: | Looking at this more closely, I see I missed the point completely. It's not a special "ー" at all, the proposed change is to use あ゙ and ア゙ instead of/as well as あ and ア. In case you can't see it, あ゙ is あ followed by the Unicode "COMBINING KATAKANA-HIRAGANA VOICED SOUND MARK", which overlays the あ as it's a non-spacing character. At present the downstream processing can't handle these. I'll have to put it to one side for now. |
