Comments: | > it's a pretty useless exception unless we allow other kanwa-type entries that would normally combine with it, such as 来-. I don't agree with that. Single-kanji country abbreviations often appear on their own (e.g. in headlines) so it's useful to have them searchable. Presumably that's why several of them are in the kokugos as regular (non-kanwa) entries. But whereas the kokugos only have a select few, we've decided to include *all* of the commonly used ones. In that sense, we're not really making an exception; we're just being consistent where the kokugos are not. |
|
7. | A* 2020-01-19 22:42:40 Rene Malenfant <...address hidden...>
Comments: | Right, but Jim--who agreed with you on the other 伯 thread--is the one who suggested that this be added. So it seems wrong to suggest that there is an agreed upon current policy. If 伯 (etc.) is actually a kanwa-type entry and we are "making an exception for it", it's a pretty useless exception unless we allow other kanwa-type entries that would normally combine with it, such as 来-. |
|
6. | A* 2020-01-15 21:36:00 Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
Comments: | This has already been discussed on at least two entries so I don't really want to repeat myself, but we're making an exception for country names. That appears to be the current policy. See 2248580 and 2836257 for the reasoning. We haven't decided to turn jmdict into a kanwa dictionary. That would be a *major* policy change. |

Comments: | I added it because I think they are basically synonyms, but "emerging market" is the much more commonly used expression in English (in the google book ngrams, it's roughly 10:1 to "emerging nation", 20:1 to "emergent nation"). "emerging market" also doesn't really refer to the market of said country but to the country, in most cases. Wiki: "An emerging market is a country ..." https://www.thebalance.com/what-are-emerging-markets-3305927 "Emerging markets, also known as emerging economies or developing countries, are nations ..." https://www.economist.com/special-report/2008/09/20/ins-and-outs "The term “emerging markets” dates back to 1981, recalls the man who invented it, Antoine van Agtmael. He was trying to start a “Third-World Equity Fund” to invest in developing-country shares, but his efforts to attract money were being constantly rebuffed. “Racking my brain, at last I came up with a term that sounded more positive and invigorating: emerging markets. ‘Third world' suggested stagnation; ‘emerging markets' suggested progress, uplift and dynamism.”" https://www.yourdictionary.com/emerging-market Webster's New World Finance and Investment Dictionary "emerging market A foreign country that is beginning to adopt capitalism and is showing promise as a good place to invest ..." This matches with what daijs says: "3 投資や貿易が盛んになり、急速に経済成長を続けている国。新興経済国。" |

Comments: | Need to resolve this one. I note we (and the JEs) have several other ...がち entries (俯きがち, 有りがち, 途切れ勝ち, etc.) but I guess I can give up on this one. |
|
4. | A* 2019-12-02 22:43:10 Rene Malenfant <...address hidden...>
Comments: | i'm not sure that the 'falling into' part should necessarily be part of the gloss... i'd say that it makes me interpret it a little too literally. probably there should be multiple senses here as in the おちいる entry. i'm indifferent as to whether these stay or go. they could probably go |

|
Comments: | I've been thinking about this (and 陥りやすい) a little more and I'm not sure they should be entries. "Prone to", "liable to", etc. is just the がち/やすい part. The meaning of 陥る should be included in the glosses. But then the entries seem unnecessary. They're just A+B combinations of 陥る and がち/やすい. |

Comments: | With Jean-Luc's welcome assistance we've now got downstream processing going for this character type - it can't go into the legacy EUC files but should be OK in the UTF8 ones. However, I'm now having doubts about whether the entry is correct. When I Google for "あ゙ー" I get a lot of hits but for "あ゛ー", i.e. for the version with a non-combining ゛. It seems like that's the actual version out there. Maybe I should make this entry have both あ゙ー and あ゛ー? |

Comments: | Looking at this more closely, I see I missed the point completely. It's not a special "ー" at all, the proposed change is to use あ゙ and ア゙ instead of/as well as あ and ア. In case you can't see it, あ゙ is あ followed by the Unicode "COMBINING KATAKANA-HIRAGANA VOICED SOUND MARK", which overlays the あ as it's a non-spacing character. At present the downstream processing can't handle these. I'll have to put it to one side for now. |
