Comments: | "Nonius" is used in German. Are the pronunciations of "ノギス" and "Nonius" really all that different? In any case, I don't think it actually matters; the kokugos acknowledge that ノギス is a bastardisation of the original word. The way I read it, "Nonius" entered Japanese through German, becoming ノギス. I can't think of another reason why the kokugos would mention German at all. Plenty of gairaigo that come from English are ultimately French/Latin/Greek/etc. in origin. |

Comments: | Since it's plainly not a derived from a German word I think a note is best. Latinizing names was common back then. You have take the kokugo views of word sources with caution; Daijirin says アナナス is from Dutch. Others say Latin. It's neither. |

Comments: | right, but all sources directly agree that Inglez->イギリス from portuguese. no one denies that 'Nonius' is ultimately the source, but what sense does it make to say that a bastardized version of a portuguese guy's latin name (that may have been transmitted to japan via the dutch) is *german* gairaigo? do human names even have a 'language of origin'? and if they do, then unless the germans pronounced it as ノギス rather than ノニウス, why would this be german and not latin? |

Comments: | The kokugos have different theories but they all agree it comes from "Nonius". A couple mention the corrupted pronunciation. I think the entry is OK as it is. イギリス doesn't sound like "Inglez" either. |

Comments: | That restriction means that only 訊く is used for sense 3, which isn't correct. The only way to indicate that 訊く only applies to sense 3 is to add restrictions to all the other senses. A cleaner solution (and what I propose) is to split 訊く out into its own entry which points here. Most of the refs don't include it as a headword, only as a "「訊く」とも書く" note. --- I've added a couple of senses. |

Comments: | I don't think this word is automatically on an exactly equal standing with 上級国民 just because it's an antonym. 上級国民 is in 知恵蔵mini, for example, with a longish entry on the word's origin in the debate over the original Tokyo Olympics logo. 下級国民 isn't in any dictionary on kotobank. I'm neutral to 下級国民, I'd like to see its usage attested (Nicolas, you could do a better job at this when you submit your entry suggestions, the editor team would appreciate it), but whether this goes in or not should have little to do with the fact 上級国民 has an entry. Just because a word is an antonym of another one doesn't mean it's widely used. |
