ノギス
1. [n]

  Comments:
"Nonius" is used in German. Are the pronunciations of "ノギス" and "Nonius" really all that different? In any case, I don't think it actually matters; the kokugos acknowledge that ノギス is a bastardisation of the original word.
The way I read it, "Nonius" entered Japanese through German, becoming ノギス. I can't think of another reason why the kokugos would mention German at all.
Plenty of gairaigo that come from English are ultimately French/Latin/Greek/etc. in origin.
5. A* 2020-01-16 07:01:02  Jim Breen <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
Since it's plainly not a derived from a German word I think a note is best. Latinizing names
was common back then.
You have take the kokugo views of word sources with caution; Daijirin says アナナス is from
Dutch. Others say Latin. It's neither.

right, but all sources directly agree that Inglez->イギリス from portuguese. no one denies that 'Nonius' is ultimately the source, but what sense does it make to say that a bastardized version of a portuguese guy's latin name (that may have been transmitted to japan via the dutch) is *german* gairaigo?

do human names even have a 'language of origin'? and if they do, then unless the germans pronounced it as ノギス rather than ノニウス, why would this be german and not latin?

The kokugos have different theories but they all agree it comes from "Nonius". A couple mention the corrupted pronunciation. I think the entry is OK as it is. イギリス doesn't sound like "Inglez" either.

I think it's important to note who the receiver is when using くれる. I don't know if it's necessary to mention the irregular imperative form.
I've added a sense that we were missing. It's sense 2 in daijr and daijs. I found an example in the Tanaka sentences: "彼は連中に有り金を全部くれてやった".
The existing sentences are incorrectly tagged. The sense 1 and sense 3 sentences should be (new) sense 3. We want "〜をくれる (not てくれる) examples for sense 1. It would be good to have non-imperative examples for sense 3.

I don't agree with that. Single-kanji country abbreviations often appear on their own (e.g. in headlines) so it's useful to have them searchable.
Presumably that's why several of them are in the kokugos as regular (non-kanwa) entries. But whereas the kokugos only have a select few, we've decided to include *all* of the commonly used ones. In that sense, we're not really making an exception; we're just being consistent where the kokugos are not.
7. A* 2020-01-19 22:42:40  Rene Malenfant <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
Right, but Jim--who agreed with you on the other 伯 thread--is the one who suggested that this be added. So it seems wrong to suggest that there is an agreed upon current policy.

If 伯 (etc.) is actually a kanwa-type entry and we are "making an exception for it", it's a pretty useless exception unless we allow other kanwa-type entries that would normally combine with it, such as 来-.
6. A* 2020-01-15 21:36:00  Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
This has already been discussed on at least two entries so I don't really want to repeat myself, but we're making an exception for country names. That appears to be the current policy. See 2248580 and 2836257 for the reasoning.
We haven't decided to turn jmdict into a kanwa dictionary. That would be a *major* policy change.

4. A* 2020-01-06 13:43:26  Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
You don't normally see 来 with foreign locations because Japanese people would usually be *going* to those places, not "coming" (来る). You'd say 訪米, 渡米, etc.
But I'm interested to see the n-gram counts as well.
3. A* 2020-01-06 00:40:55  Jim Breen <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
I'd like to sit on this until the ngrams are back.
We do have entries like 来京; although it's probably a kanwa matter, I wonder about adding a
"coming to; arriving in" sense to our 来/らい entry.
2. A* 2020-01-05 22:06:32  Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
I don't think we need this.
I know there's a large 日系 population in Brazil, but this appears to be pretty obscure. We don't have 来米, 来英, 来仏, etc. and I suspect several of them are more common than 来伯.

Yes, the other ~中 terms need review; many are tagged as nouns.

we have this sense of 中 marked as [n-suf]. if it's a suffix, then 公開+中 is a single word and so for consistency we shouldn't normally mark any of these ~中 entries as [exp] (i haven't looked to see how many are)
