I sometimes check twitter for mentions of jmdict/jisho and I've noticed that this entry frequently comes up for discussion. It's apparent there's a sizable contingent of anime/manga fans who are into "lolicon content" that are adamant that being sexually attracted to prepubescent girls is a completely different thing from pedophilia. I don't know anything about Kevin in particular and am certainly not accusing him of anything, but I think we need to be aware there are a lot of people online who are very strongly opposed to "ロリコン" being defined as "pedophile" solely because it makes them feel personally attacked. We are not only concerned with getting the nuance right but also conveying the actual meaning of the word. Kevin changed "male pedophilia" to "sexual attraction to young girls" and "male pedophile" to "male with such an attraction", but are these really closer in nuance and meaning to ロリコン or just wordier and wafflier ways of saying the exact same things? That's a rhetorical question - it's obvious to me its the latter. It's hairsplitting. Look up the definitions of "pedophile" and "pedophilia" in any English dictionary. Notice also that ALL the kokugo definitions for ロリコン mention "性欲" - that an otaku-dominated wiki site like pixiv disagrees ("特別な感情" is what they call it) seems entirely irrelevant to me. This isn't a case of "Western bias", it's a case of looking at reliable sources instead of user-generated content.

I agree that "lolicon" rather than "male pedophile" should lead, for nuance etc. reasons, but that word will be meaningless to a lot of people, so we need to also include glosses that pithily explain what this actually means. We always strive for the most economical definitions so why exactly is it that we shouldn't call a spade a spade here?

Another point about the other reference Kevin posted is a blog post written by a person calling himself "初老のオタ" and the argument he is making is that ロリコン IS in fact used to refer to male pedophiles/pedophilia in Japanese media but that he finds this usage "wrong" because he has personally somewhat convolutedly decided that a "ロリコン" is somebody who is "sexually or romantically attracted to underage girls but doesn't necessarily want to act on it in real life" and that a ペド on the other hand is somebody whose "ultimate purpose" (最終目的) is to have sex with underage girls:

Many of the references given by others below, despite their intentions, clearly imply a distinction between the concepts of lolicon and pedophilia. Some of them, such as the Wiki quote, literally state that they are different concepts. Despite this, this same reference was somehow used to justify including the gloss of "pedophile"? Truly strange, and obviously Western bias.

The pixiv article clearly states that lolicon is not necessarily sexual, which is not something that can be said about the different concept of pedophilia. Indeed, the very fact that "pedophilia" has entered the Japanese lexicon in katakana implies a core difference.

The blog article I provide underscores the fact that this is, at best, a debated topic. The current entry glibly sides with one side of this "debate" in a way that is unscholarly. Japan has a big cultural preference for the young and 未熟, and understanding that at a deep level is essential to understanding why it's inappropriate to glibly label lolicon to be pedophilia.

Honestly, they are quite obviously similar but different concepts, and it's culturally ignorant and chauvinistic to include this gloss.

I agree 1 sense is actually better, but 
the previous glosses "male pedophile" and 
"male sexually attracted to prepubescent 
girls" align much closer with what's in

hand skip out on the "性愛／性欲” part 
(which is in all 3 kokugos) and on the "男
性が、” in nikk. So I don't see how that's 
an improvement.

I asked a native speaker btw what they thought and they said （ことばとして）軽いじゃ軽いけど、ペドファイルじゃペドファイル。 I don't think they're actually considered two different things to most Japanese (outside of the otaku realm), but it might certainly be the case that there's a weaker connotation of "actual child molester" than there is for say ペドファイル.

I agree 1 sense is actually better, but 
the previous glosses "male pedophile" and

girls" align much closer with what's in

性が、” in nikk. So I don't see how that's

The definition of "lolicon" is 
problematic, and I'd like to persuade you 
to update it since it is misinformation 
and sexist.

The definition erroneously uses the 
definition of male paedophile. A 
paedophile is the attraction to 
prepubescent individuals, and pedophilia 
is the attraction itself to prepubescent 
individuals. The term "Lolita" comes from 
the novel and is only about an early 
adolescence girl. Lolita was depicted as 
12 in the novel, and 14 in the film. 99% 
of the depictions of fictional minors in 
the lolicon genre have small breasts. 
Prepubescent children don't have breasts. 
They're flat as a board.

The shotacon entry doesn't say "female 
pedophile". This is sexist because it 
implies only men can have attractions to 
minors. Women can be attracted to female

In this case both Daijirin and GG5 leave that sense unsplit. GG5's entry is interesting as it states the broad meaning first (a course; a line; a tack), and then goes on to more specific applications (policy/plan/principle/aim/etc.) I can see your point, but in this case I don't think it appropriate to put policy by itself. To me it's a refinement of course/line; not a different meaning.

something immediate. In the first 
sentence, "plan" is the best translation. 
The police aren't talking about how 
they're going to tackle the investigation 
in general, they're just stating the very 
next item on the agenda.

If you can find sentences where "policy" 
would be the wrong translation, but also 
others where "plan" is wrong, that seems 
to me like a very good reason to split 
into two senses.

I don't agree. It's a pretty fine distinction and "policy" isn't just used in political contexts. 教育方針, 営業方針 and 経営方針 are all translated as "~ policy" in the JEs.

anyone can make up ateji for anything.  it's like documenting intentional puns or misspellings in an english-english dictionary.  there needs to be good justification for including an ateji as a kanji headword, esp. if it is the only one.  (such justification being "it appears as the headword in a kokugo dictionary", etc.)

Look... the expression's been used in Japanese since at least the 60's. I've actually heard it used in conversation more than once. The 
native informant I previously mentioned has too. It's in Wikipedia, Hatena, Pixiv Hyakkajiten. It gets 9 hits the past 12 hours on 
twitter (i.e. the ones above, so that's excluding everything that was or could have been about the band). If this hasn't "entered the 
Japanese language" then we should probably slash a large portion of the gairaigo already in jmdict because I seriously doubt even a 
quarter of them would clear this bar of actual usage. The argument that it's not helpful for translation purposes could also be applied 
to a majority of our gairaigo entries (but they, and this entry, are still useful in other ways). I also disagree entirely with the 
notion that the bar should be set higher for derogative terms than non-derogative ones and that it'd ever be harmful to include a slur 
that is in use (or has actually been in use - and even if it in someway would be, I don't think it's relevant to what we're doing here 
and not something we should have to consider)

I note that those examples are all quotes or explanations.
Even if it's widely known by Japanese people, I don't really see it as a Japanese expression. I think there needs to be evidence of widespread usage (beyond quotes, etc.) before something like this can be considered to have entered the Japanese language.
My comment about it not being harmless had to do with the offensive nature of the term. If we're going to include a racial slur that isn't in any dictionary, we need to have some pretty good justification for doing so.
Ultimately, I just don't think this is needed. It's a transliteration of English, it's not especially common, and I can't see it being helpful for translation purposes.

I feel it's a word that's widely known 
among Japanese, including older 
generations, unlike say alot of the slang 
expressions we have. It's a little similar 
to エコノミックアニマル also in that it's an 
English expression only rarely used in 
English but one that Japanese people 
imagine is being frequently used to 
ridicule them, so it has taken on a life 
on its own in Japan.
I do think it's perfectly "harmless" to 
include because it's without a doubt 
correct to say it's used in Japanese with 
the meaning suggested.

It probably is used more in Japanese than in English (I haven't heard it either) but I still feel it's pretty obscure and not worth adding.
With other submissions, we could say "it's harmless, let's add it" but that's not the case here. I think we need better examples of usage.
Considering that we have entries for イエロー and モンキー, I think it's safe to ignore anyway. In context, the meaning should be clear.

I'm not sure the usage is up the level that would justify an entry, especially for a term that has the potential to be highly offensive.

I think the word has real usage. I've 
heard it in conversation more than once. 
"どうせ僕たちのことをイエローモンキーだと思ってる
でしょ" etc. It's similar to ジャップ土人 
which seems relatively common on some 
left-leaning parts of the Japanese 
Internet. It's also the exact same thing 
as ジャップ, which is also an entry.

A fair point. All the WWW hits I can see are for the band. I think we need to be wary of gairaigo expressions which are really transliterations of English, etc. with no real usage in Japanese.
I'll move this entry to enamdict as the band name.

I think tapered knife makes it kinda sound like it's notably more tapered, than a usual knife ...but I'm not sure how exactly to write as a definition it, myself, either.
"nata with a more normal blade profile, tapering to a point" would be accurate and all, but would leave people wondering what a nata is.
