Comments: | Almost all the 28 sentences are using it to mean "typical" and "characteristic". I assume this is sense 1. |

Comments: | Sorry to reopen this but I think 4 senses is excessive. The kokugos and JEs have at most three (modern) senses; some only have two. I got "emotive conviction" from Makino and Tsutsui's Dictionary of Intermediate Japanese Grammar. It has a good entry on this expression. |

Comments: | The Ichiman collection didn't differentiate on sense. The "gai1" came from simple high Google counts on an Eijiro-based gairaigo list. Since "ホール + hall" is much more common than the others I'm happy for the tag to stay here, but maybe "ホール + hole", etc. are common enough too. |
|
7. | A* 2019-08-27 04:14:17 Rene Malenfant <...address hidden...> | |
Comments: | i think we need to be careful with the usage tags here. can we consult the original sources and check where the gai1/ichi1 came from? IIRC, gai1 should be linked to a specific english term (hall vs. hole), whereas ichi1 will be ambiguous. i suspect that ホール will also deserve some form of usage tag |

Comments: | Thanks to everyone for the thoughtful feedback. I agree now that the entry is probably fine as-is, as long as we take care to avoid using "meld" and "yaku" interchangeably on senses that are mahjong-specific (unlike this one). |

Comments: | I agree with Jim - in hanafuda and mekuri karuta, "win condition" does not work at all as a translation. Thanks for sharing your expertise on mahjong through so many entries though, Stephen! (not to mention the great work you're doing on Yomichan) |

Comments: | I'm uncomfortable with this edit as I feel it's rather too focused on the specific situation with mahjong, where a chow (which I regard as a type of meld) is not a "win condition". Unless we were to create a mahjong-specific sense, I'd rather the sense was left the way it was, with "meld" still there as a gloss. After all the term is used in other games too. |
