I don't see any evidence for it being more commonly written with kana. It's perfectly possible it's more common in transcripts, books etc. as "おっす" but that's only one specific arena and probably not the one that's the most relevant for an informal male greeting. The google results for 海賊のドクロ and "pirate skull" are pretty much identical, so I'd say the meaning is actually fairly obvious. 
Either way, with not only 300 hits in the ngrams and not in any source, I doubt it's an established term to the degree you could say 
it means one over the other.

the くれ note was a remnant from before this was given the special PoS v1-s.  IMO the note was more useful than the PoS, which is defined as "Ichidan verb - kureru special class", which doesn't tell the user anything.  (although the wwwjdic conjugation table does give it as Imperative = 呉れ[ろ])

I think it's important to note who the receiver is when using くれる. I don't know if it's necessary to mention the irregular imperative form.
I've added a sense that we were missing. It's sense 2 in daijr and daijs. I found an example in the Tanaka sentences: "彼は連中に有り金を全部くれてやった".
The existing sentences are incorrectly tagged. The sense 1 and sense 3 sentences should be (new) sense 3. We want "〜をくれる (not てくれる) examples for sense 1. It would be good to have non-imperative examples for sense 3.

offensive for its casual　reference to terror. 
Although the (largely hypothetical) potential 
for offensiveness might be different, I think 
it's a good match in register. Finding the 
right translation is always a balancing act, 
especially for slang, but I'm not seeing at 
all any issues with having "lewdness" (which I 
frankly struggle to see in expression "food 
porn") in the first gloss. 

Also, we don't add usage notes on the English 
glosses, only on the Japanese itself. There 
could be advantages to adding such notes, but 
since something like that would affect a lot 
of entries, that discussion would be best

The references specify 2+ strands of yarn, and while "double stranded knitting" and "knitting with yarn held double" are real terms, "multi stranded knitting" isn't really used. Googling "multi stranded knitting" returns results for simply stranded knitting, which is a separate technique altogether.

I took my eye off this one, but I meant to add the comment that as a 70-something non-manga person, the first time I saw ナルト走り I thought it was something to do with the whirlpool near Tokushima.

i think the 'carlton dance' comparison is pretty good although fresh prince is not quite as culturally impactful.  also, i don't think this is really manga slang (i.e., a term used in manga) is it?  isn't it just a colloquialism that happens to be based on manga?

I wouldn't really be surprised to see the "Carlton dance" in a large-scale comprehensive dictionary, eventually. "The robot" is in Collins English Dictionary 
as "robot dancing". The moonwalk is just a single move (or at least not a full dance) and is definitely in several dictionaries. Last year the Swedish verb 
"flossa" (to do the floss) was added to a list of a "今年の新語"-like list compiled by the Swedish Language Council ("the primary regulatory body for the 
advancement and cultivation of the Swedish language"). I think the large 英英 dictionaries are much more concerned about not including "fleeting" expressions 
than what we should/need to be. Even if a word might disappear in a year or two, the contemporary texts using it won't. As a 和英 dictionary, we are much less 
prescriptive than 英英's and we don't have to worry about having weird effects like actually altering the target language/making a term become more accepted 
because "it's in the dictionary!".
 
It's interesting that "Naruto run" seems more commonly used/known in English than ナルト走り is in Japanese - several of the Japanese googits are about its 
popularity abroad.

I think this entry is at last somewhat useful. Not sure it's fair to call it "m-sl" (but then again I don't like the tag and think we should get rid of it)

Odd, I got 6000 hits  yesterday.
But the more important point is that this is just a goofy anime thing. It's not some widespread cultural phenomenon.
Indeed, ナルト走り would not be understand by someone who isn't familiar with Naruto, but that's true of all pop-culture references. You wouldn't expect to find something like "Carlton dance" in an English dictionary.
I feel quite strongly that this shouldn't go in.
