Comments: | i don't think that reading belongs here. it is not supported by any dictionary. references like "frequency of okurigana use" are not trustworthy here. for a very common term with an obvious reading such as this one, okurigana is only supplied when the author is intentionally using an unusual reading (e.g. gikun) probably for artistic purposes personally i would not bother with this now that おおいくさ is properly recorded. |

Comments: | いくさ is a kun reading of 戦, so not "ik". おおいくさ is more usually associated with 大軍/おおいくさ which means the same as 大戦 but is much less common. I'll set up an entry for it. They could be merged, but we don't like merges based on marginal readings, as is the case here. |

Comments: | I added it because I think they are basically synonyms, but "emerging market" is the much more commonly used expression in English (in the google book ngrams, it's roughly 10:1 to "emerging nation", 20:1 to "emergent nation"). "emerging market" also doesn't really refer to the market of said country but to the country, in most cases. Wiki: "An emerging market is a country ..." https://www.thebalance.com/what-are-emerging-markets-3305927 "Emerging markets, also known as emerging economies or developing countries, are nations ..." https://www.economist.com/special-report/2008/09/20/ins-and-outs "The term “emerging markets” dates back to 1981, recalls the man who invented it, Antoine van Agtmael. He was trying to start a “Third-World Equity Fund” to invest in developing-country shares, but his efforts to attract money were being constantly rebuffed. “Racking my brain, at last I came up with a term that sounded more positive and invigorating: emerging markets. ‘Third world' suggested stagnation; ‘emerging markets' suggested progress, uplift and dynamism.”" https://www.yourdictionary.com/emerging-market Webster's New World Finance and Investment Dictionary "emerging market A foreign country that is beginning to adopt capitalism and is showing promise as a good place to invest ..." Comments: | I agree with Rene on "(w". The ( serves basically the same function as (). It has no meaning and it's not pronounced. I don't think it should be included here. However, I agree with Marcus that 笑 should remain as a headword. We lose the わら reading if it's dropped from here. The same applies to w. I think 笑 should come before w. It must be the more common form overall. Finally, I wouldn't call this an abbreviation. 笑 and 笑い are used differently. |

Comments: | >> レイプシーン is to me fundamentally different from 救急車のサイレン (16052) or 教会の屋根 (2927) I gave those as English examples (noun+noun) because I didn't think the "red balloon" (adjective+noun) comparison was apt. Personally, I don't see a case made for adding レイプシーン that can't be made for 喫煙シーン/会話シーン. So unless we decide that every type of movie scene should go in, my position is that none of them are necessary. >> I also disagree that it's "not likely" anyone will do an E->J lookup for "rape scene". What is there to base that assumption on? That no one would expect to find it in a dictionary. There probably isn't a dictionary on earth in any language that contains the expression "rape scene" as a headword. If someone wanted to say "rape scene", they'd look up "rape" and "scene". I think that's a perfectly reasonable assumption. Regarding セックスシーン, Japanese dictionaries already have entries for ベッドシーン and 濡れ場 so it's helpful to show that セックスシーン is another common term used to refer to the same thing. Also, people are *much* more likely to do an E->J search in this case. |

Comments: | I'm sorry to keep this going, but I'm not really satisfied with this conclusion. I feel like we're just setting us up for repeating this argument again at a later stage, on a different entry. I don't think anybody has explained how a "セックスシーン" and a "レイプシーン" differ, for starters. A "rape scene" is idiomatic in both English and Japanese and is a well-understood and often-commented on (in media, academia) concept/trope in movie making. レイ プシーン is to me fundamentally different from 救急車のサイレン (16052) or 教会の屋根 (2927), not least evidenced by the fact that the most common way of phrasing those things in Japanese is as ~の~. (cf. レイプのシーン: 130, レイプの場面: 58, 教会屋根: 90, 救急車サイレン: 130) It's also obvious somebody wouldn't refer to a "church roof" as a "church roof" except to distinguish it from other roofs. Normally, you'd refer to it as "the roof" (or "the siren") without qualification, unlike I think a rape scene. The difference between a レイプシーン and a 喫煙シーン is that a rape scene is a type or category of scene, while a 喫煙シーン is a scene where smoking happens to occur - it's not a specific type of scene or even the main purpose of the scene. "OK, let's add a tobacco-smoking scene here!" That said, considering how much 喫 煙シーン's have been discussed in Japanese media, I'm not really sure I'd oppose its inclusion if somebody suggested it. As for 会話シーン (21543, cf. 会話のシーン: 6846), I don't know, the case for inclusion seems weaker than it is for レイプシーン, but I see it's in wadoku. I also disagree that it's "not likely" anyone will do an E->J lookup for "rape scene". What is there to base that assumption on? The dictionary files have all levels of users, from absolute beginners to native speakers. If somebody might look up "sex scene", they might as well look up "rape scene." |

Comments: | I wouldn't really be surprised to see the "Carlton dance" in a large-scale comprehensive dictionary, eventually. "The robot" is in Collins English Dictionary as "robot dancing". The moonwalk is just a single move (or at least not a full dance) and is definitely in several dictionaries. Last year the Swedish verb "flossa" (to do the floss) was added to a list of a "今年の新語"-like list compiled by the Swedish Language Council ("the primary regulatory body for the advancement and cultivation of the Swedish language"). I think the large 英英 dictionaries are much more concerned about not including "fleeting" expressions than what we should/need to be. Even if a word might disappear in a year or two, the contemporary texts using it won't. As a 和英 dictionary, we are much less prescriptive than 英英's and we don't have to worry about having weird effects like actually altering the target language/making a term become more accepted because "it's in the dictionary!". It's interesting that "Naruto run" seems more commonly used/known in English than ナルト走り is in Japanese - several of the Japanese googits are about its popularity abroad. I think this entry is at last somewhat useful. Not sure it's fair to call it "m-sl" (but then again I don't like the tag and think we should get rid of it) |

Comments: | Odd, I got 6000 hits yesterday. But the more important point is that this is just a goofy anime thing. It's not some widespread cultural phenomenon. Indeed, ナルト走り would not be understand by someone who isn't familiar with Naruto, but that's true of all pop-culture references. You wouldn't expect to find something like "Carlton dance" in an English dictionary. I feel quite strongly that this shouldn't go in. |

Comments: | i agree. extremely productive and it's a first-grade kanji with a standard, obvious meaning. for all these really productive A+B compounds i think we need a higher standard of inclusion (i.e., it is a headword in another dictionary, not merely used somewhere in a giant dictionary) |

Comments: | Given that 大 is a very common prefix with a very basic meaning, I think the threshold should be higher. We don't have any of the above examples, which are all more common than 大激怒. I don't think we need any of them. |

Comments: | "British Overseas Territory" is an officially used term in English but I'm not sure it's necessary to include イギリスの海外領土 here. As Jim said, it's more of a descriptive term. |
