Refs: | meikyo たま・う【▽賜う・▽給う】 動五 終止形・連体形、ならびに連用形は、「たもう」ということも多い。その場合、現代かなづかいは「たもう」とするのが一般的。 shimeikai has no entry for たもう, but one example sentence for たまう is given as たもう 「神の与えたもうた試練」 |
|
Comments: | yeah, this is a mess. e.g. koj has three separate entries (oubunsha kogo jiten has four) for: -- たまう 【給う・賜う】 [1][v5u,vt][hon] to give たまう 【給ふ・賜ふ】 [1][v2h-s,vt][arch,hum] to receive *but it's also a v4h variant of the other たまう たも・う 【給ふ・賜ふ】 [1][v4h,vt][arch,hon] to give [1][v2h-s,vt][arch,hum] to receive but the conjugations of koj's たもう don't match the conjugation of たもう in modern japanese (described by meikyo above). for modern japanese, we need たまう=v5u, たもう=v5u-s (but only conjugates as 終止形, 連体形, 連用形) also, we generally don't give suffixes before the meaning of the standalone word, so the order should be swapped |

Comments: | Should we mark the たもう reading as not having a stem/ending boundary or conjugating? If we don't do so, some users or client software might pronounce it as タモウ or conjugate it as たもいます / たもえ. As far as I know, only some words have the cross-boundary reading giving rise to a new combination of stem + ending: 【言う】いう→ゆう→ゆった 【酔う】えう→よう→よった According to this link, 給う isn't such a word: https://oshiete.goo.ne.jp/qa/1844024.html |

Comments: | Naginatajutsu refers to the old-school martial art, different to and separate from the modern sport of naginata. To quote from the top of Japanese Wikipedia's article (above and before the actual article itself) on naginata (the weapon ...with a similar headnotes for the pages mentioned): この項目では、武器としての薙刀について説明しています。 現代武道の薙刀については「なぎなた」をご覧ください。 古武道の薙刀については「薙刀術」をご覧ください。 (Kinda interesting how the art is typically written with hiragana, to distinguish the two, at least in writing. Just when I though that should be noted, I notice that a [uk]-tag has already been added. Nice) |

Comments: | In the quoted sentence: "同署は勤務管理の状況などについて、関係者から事情 を聴く方針。" I agree it's an issue the first word suggested for the 方針 here is "policy", because it's wrong and could be misunderstood to mean "the police have a general policy of hearing everybody involved" (which they probably do, but that's not what the sentence says). If we had two senses, we'd get around that. |

Comments: | Whilst I agree that the most "typical"/"normal" なた is superficially somewhat similar to a cleaver (though not nearly as broad), a fundamental defining characteristic of a cleaver is still that it is a butcher/kitchen knife. (and again, the many significant differences I mentioned before) There are many knives that a layman wouldn't be able to tell apart, just to look at them, that are nevertheless in very distinct and different categories. (the same applies to, e.g., axes) ...and many なた do not have that distinctive rectangular shape, as is clear from the references I mention. Note that 剣鉈 and 鉈鎌 are types of 鉈. |

Comments: | A cleaver is a butcher/kitchen knife. It has a completely different purpose and also possess very different blades, to a nata. A lot broader blade (a lot broader than the handle, notably) and though they are relatively thick and sturdy, they are significantly less so, than a nata. A lot of typical uses of a nata (especially splitting wood), would utterly ruin any cleaver. The closest thing to a nata, would be a machete or a hunting knife. (and ken'nata do look like the latter, as well as being used as such, in addition to its other uses) It is neither, however, so it would be wrong to call it such. The angle is notable (though not universal/required), but I guess it's not really necessary to mention. Also the blade is often of uniform breadth (basically a rectangle) aside from ken'nata (剣鉈), which have a more typical knife shape as well as usually being straight, but the same applies to that, so no need to mention it either, I suppose. Speaking of which: Adding an entry for 剣鉈 may be a good idea. |
