Comments: | "you have a tendency to cause forks" - that's a quite the unnecessarily hostile overstatement. As is "submission rampage," which I can only read as an implication I'm somehow causing the dictionary more harm than good. I go through the submission list every now and then to check if I've made any mistakes, and sometimes I realize something could be added. I of course aim to do a complete and perfect entry from the start, but in the end, the entries end up more complete precisely because I do give them a second (and third) glance. (though I guess this one is a little overly messy with little time passed between the edits - sorry!) |
|

Refs: | koj, daijs - nothing wrong with original gloss in ref to the state of being once-divorced. koj adds that it is joc: 一度離婚経験があることを冗談めかしていう語 |
|
Comments: | Please refrain from making four amendments at once, especially when you're going on a submission rampage. Multiple amendments make it very difficult to tell what you've changed and why, you have a tendency to cause forks, and in general it just makes a mess of our approval queue. Plan it out and make one amendment. |

Comments: | Image search for "ぼかし" is a lot of blurred stuff. Note: ぼかし袴 returns images of hakama with a clear gradient effect. "bokashi", somewhat like "bokeh", seems to have been imported into English in some circles, both as a composting technique and as an art style. If I had a nickel for every website that said: Bokashi (ぼかし) is Japanese for "shading off" or "gradation." I'd have a lot of nickels. Usually these are sites about composting. Most of the terms in one reverso match: 2ぼかし量を変更する グラデーション領域内のぼかし(グラデーション)の幅を調節できます。 To change the amount of blur You can adjust the width of the blur (gradient) of the gradation in the area. ========== Note: [1] and [2] may be of no real relation: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bokashi_(horticulture) Nomenclature The name bokashi is transliterated from spoken Japanese (ぼかし). However, Japanese-English dictionaries give the word an older artistic meaning: "shading or gradation" of images – especially applied to woodblock prints.[1][2] This later extended to mean pixellation or fogging in censored photographs. Therefore, its application to fermented organic matter is of uncertain origin; if both uses are related, unifying concepts may be "alteration" or "fading away". |

However, I agree with Marcus that 笑 should remain as a headword. We lose the わら reading if it's dropped from here. The same applies to w. I think 笑 should come before w. It must be the more common form overall. Finally, I wouldn't call this an abbreviation. 笑 and 笑い are used differently. |

The kanji 卍 (manji)—picked as a runner-up by Sanseidō—is an ancient religious symbol, but has recently become highly popular among Japanese teens with a new signification. It was apparently first used as an intensifier like maji (“really” or “totally”) and is often seen in the form maji manji. Later, manji span off into meanings like “really good,” “really bad,” and so many other variations that the Sanseidō judges gave up on the task of coming up with a definition. One questioned whether the people using it even knew what it meant." |

At the end of a day, we're a free-to-use wa-ei online dictionary - I don't really think we have to worry about coming across as frivolous for having pop culture-related entries. I think it's sl rather than col because I don't think it's widely understood outside people watching the anime. |

Comments: | I wouldn't really be surprised to see the "Carlton dance" in a large-scale comprehensive dictionary, eventually. "The robot" is in Collins English Dictionary as "robot dancing". The moonwalk is just a single move (or at least not a full dance) and is definitely in several dictionaries. Last year the Swedish verb "flossa" (to do the floss) was added to a list of a "今年の新語"-like list compiled by the Swedish Language Council ("the primary regulatory body for the advancement and cultivation of the Swedish language"). I think the large 英英 dictionaries are much more concerned about not including "fleeting" expressions than what we should/need to be. Even if a word might disappear in a year or two, the contemporary texts using it won't. As a 和英 dictionary, we are much less prescriptive than 英英's and we don't have to worry about having weird effects like actually altering the target language/making a term become more accepted because "it's in the dictionary!". It's interesting that "Naruto run" seems more commonly used/known in English than ナルト走り is in Japanese - several of the Japanese googits are about its popularity abroad. I think this entry is at last somewhat useful. Not sure it's fair to call it "m-sl" (but then again I don't like the tag and think we should get rid of it) |
|
6. | A* 2019-07-01 13:05:26 Robin Scott <...address hidden...> | |
Comments: | Odd, I got 6000 hits yesterday. But the more important point is that this is just a goofy anime thing. It's not some widespread cultural phenomenon. Indeed, ナルト走り would not be understand by someone who isn't familiar with Naruto, but that's true of all pop-culture references. You wouldn't expect to find something like "Carlton dance" in an English dictionary. I feel quite strongly that this shouldn't go in. |

Comments: | So it seems that べたっと and べたりと can mean floppingly or sticking, or both. ぺたり(と)is already an entry: "(adv-to) (on-mim) slapping on; flopping down". GG5 has ぺたっと with the same meaning. It also seems from the GG5, etc. glosses that the べた/ぺた is interchangeable, and that ペタッと is the most common variant. They could go in here, or be a separate entry. |
