Refs: | There's some mentions in English, but most of it in articles/theses etc. written by Japanese people, e.g. https://asia.nikkei.com/Editor-s-Picks/Japan-Update/Japan-must-boost-inward-investment-or-lose- global-clout "As a Tokyo pre-teen then cramming for middle school entrance examinations, I recall memorizing a popular foreign moniker for Japan -- "economic animal." It was coined, we were told, by our friends around the world as a criticism of our political weakness and a sort of compliment to our industrial strength." Though nikk suggests it was used disparagingly by "欧米人", I don't see any evidence of this online, but there is evidence of it being used (with this particular derogatory meaning) of Japanese people in South and SE Asia: https://thediplomat.com/2012/08/japans-shrinking-asean-soft-power/ "In the initial decades after WWII, Japan’s engagement with Southeast Asia was limited, as Tokyo looked to South Asia for economic opportunities. It was only when those opportunities dried up that Japan found deeper engagement with Southeast Asia unavoidable. While Japanese-ASEAN trade grew rapidly, local populations grew increasingly resentful of Tokyo’s growing economic presence. Indeed, Southeast Asians nicknamed Japan the “economic animal.”" Wolf Mendl (2001), "Japan and South East Asia" (google books) "In many ways this economic domination of Southeast Asia was more devastating to the Asian psyche than the war. It would raise images of the Japanese, as former Malaysian Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman said, as an economic animal. This anti-Japanese feeling on the part of the Southeast Asians culminated in an anti-Japanese goods campaign ..." daijs says it was coined in 1965 by Pakistan's foreign minister/president Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and this might have been true: https://www.jstor.org/stable/41393280?seq=1#page_scan_tab_contents "... I called the Japanese people "economic animals" ..." (not visible in the preview but appears in the google summary) another book on google books: "... in the early 1960's... At about the same time, Pakistani President Bhutto called the Japanese nation "economic animals." In those days, the coverage of Japan by mass media in other countries was almost negligible." Themes and Theories in Modern Japanese History (google books): "It was former prime minister Bhutto of Pakistan who coined the term 'economic animals' in referring to the Japanese" |
|
Comments: | I think "economic animal" should be a gloss, but I think a note on how it originated is relevant (though it can perhaps be shortened) |

It appears that as long as the sentence ends up negative, this works, for example: はかばかしい成果とはいかなかったようだな https://yourei.jp/はかばかしい成果 (a bunch of negated はかばかしい成果 results at the link). In fact, uses of はかばかしい are almost all negated: (likewise with はかばかしく + neg. verb) https://yourei.jp/はかばかしい |

Comments: | Perhaps not surprising given the derogatory nature, but the more colloquial: "there is no cure for stupid" (*sometimes* ended with "people", but usually not) is even more popular. Also high up: "there ain't no cure for stupid" Not sure either of the old glosses are necessary. I knew this common English phrase of the top of my head and went looking to confirm it, only to find it's already a tatoeba sentence as well: https://tatoeba.org/en/sentences/show/2495367 There's an xref pointing here that will also need to be updated when concluded. Google results for "a born fool is never cured" are almost all dictionary references, or applications of this gloss to Japanese. Not a particularly common English expression it would seem. Can't see why it should be worth preserving in spite of its longevity in current references. I guess a [lit] entry is fine, but seems redundant given how close this is to the incredibly-common English gloss. (If this were [id] and not [proverb] I'm pretty sure we wouldn't bother). |

Comments: | Marcus: My argument is that expressions that use this very common and ordinary structure (see examples above) aren't really worth adding unless they're idioms (or in some other way interesting). 結婚を前提に is certainly very common but it's also literal. Jim: I still think the meaning would be obvious enough in context, but I'm not going to contest it any further. --- I don't think it should be tagged as adv. |

Comments: | The thing that stood out with this expression was the "view to" and "in mind" associated with 前提 as this wasn't really what we or other JE dictionaries were saying (e.g. preamble; premise; reason; prerequisite; condition; assumption; hypothesis; given). That entry has now been extended, so the case is weakened a little, but I think that anyone approaching 結婚を前提に with the usual lexical resources would probably go for "prerequisite" or "premise". I think this can go in. I'll approve it and reopen. |

Comments: | I'm not proposing to add this because I think the particular structure of [noun]を[noun]に is uncommon or particularly interesting. It's not a grammar point - it's just a very a common expression that happens to have this specific structure, so I don't really understand the argument that you could replace 結婚 or 前提 with plenty of other words (with different meanings). Yes, of course you could, but then it wouldn't be the same set phrase. |
|
6. | A* 2019-06-25 14:38:33 Robin Scott <...address hidden...> | |
Comments: | I just see it as a rather uninteresting example of a particular grammar point. You can swap out 結婚 and 前提 with so many different words to create other expressions that I don't believe are any more or less noteworthy. The meaning of 世界を舞台に is less obvious so I think it's easier to make a case for including it. From what I can see, the only other similar entry we have is 憂さを晴らしに. I'd prefer just to create an example sentence for 前提 which uses 結婚を前提に. |
