エコノミックアニマル [gai2] エコノミック・アニマル
1. [n] [derog]
《term orig. used in South and Southeast Asia in the 1960's and 70's in ref. to the Japanese》
▶ economic animal
▶ person or people who only strive for profit

There's some mentions in English, but most of it in articles/theses etc. written by Japanese
people, e.g.
https://asia.nikkei.com/Editor-s-Picks/Japan-Update/Japan-must-boost-inward-investment-or-lose-
global-clout
"As a Tokyo pre-teen then cramming for middle school entrance examinations, I recall memorizing a
popular foreign moniker for Japan -- "economic animal." It was coined, we were told, by our
friends around the world as a criticism of our political weakness and a sort of compliment to our
industrial strength."

Though nikk suggests it was used disparagingly by "欧米人", I don't see any evidence of this
online, but there is evidence of it being used (with this particular derogatory meaning) of
Japanese people in South and SE Asia:

https://thediplomat.com/2012/08/japans-shrinking-asean-soft-power/
"In the initial decades after WWII, Japan’s engagement with Southeast Asia was limited, as Tokyo
looked to South Asia for economic opportunities. It was only when those opportunities dried up
that Japan found deeper engagement with Southeast Asia unavoidable. While Japanese-ASEAN trade
grew rapidly, local populations grew increasingly resentful of Tokyo’s growing economic presence.
Indeed, Southeast Asians nicknamed Japan the “economic animal.”"

Wolf Mendl (2001), "Japan and South East Asia" (google books)
"In many ways this economic domination of Southeast Asia was more devastating to the Asian psyche
than the war. It would raise images of the Japanese, as former Malaysian Prime Minister Tunku
Abdul Rahman said, as an economic animal. This anti-Japanese feeling on the part of the Southeast
Asians culminated in an anti-Japanese goods campaign ..."

daijs says it was coined in 1965 by Pakistan's foreign minister/president Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and
this might have been true:
https://www.jstor.org/stable/41393280?seq=1#page_scan_tab_contents
"... I called the Japanese people "economic animals" ..." (not visible in the preview but appears
in the google summary)
another book on google books:
"... in the early 1960's... At about the same time, Pakistani President Bhutto called the
Japanese nation "economic animals." In those days, the coverage of Japan by mass media in other
countries was almost negligible."

Themes and Theories in Modern Japanese History (google books):
"It was former prime minister Bhutto of Pakistan who coined the term 'economic animals' in
referring to the Japanese"
  Comments:
I think "economic animal" should be a gloss, but I think a note on how it originated is relevant
(though it can perhaps be shortened)

I think Nils' 2012 addition is based on a subset of a GG5 sense. 中辞典 has it as a separate sense.
This proposal is based on the spread of senses in the references. There are 17 Tanaka sentences which seem to cover only the first two senses.

so my refs are split 50:50. my sense from which refs list it which way is that treating it as [vi] is more old-fashioned/classical and treating it as [vt] is more modern. i'd be inclined to keep listing it as [vt] based on "helpfulness to learners", as you note

Although 誇る often takes を, the kokugos consider it intransitive (due to a different understanding of transitivity in Japanese).
There's probably a discussion to be had about whether we follow the kokugos in cases like this or just use the English definition of transitive (which is probably more helpful for learners).
But up until now, we've gone with the former approach, so for consistency's sake we should probably put it back to vi.

I'm not totally convinced the "horizon" sense is an abbreviation of 地平線. Daijr says: 「地平線」に同じ。

  Comments:
I've never heard of "water brash" nor "sour stomach", though I don't
know if that's just because of where I grew up. Water brash seems to
be a medical term. More specifically, it's when the acid from acid
reflux mixes with the saliva in your throat and remains there.
I can't speak for sour stomach, though it sounds like a regional way
of referring to an upset stomach.

While heartburn, indigestion, water brash, etc are symptoms associated
with 溜飲, I do think that "acid reflux" and "stomach acid (in the
throat)" are the two most appropriate glosses for this word.

Meikyou gives us, "胃の消化作用が低下し、胸焼けがしたり、すっぱい胃液がのど
に上がってきたりすること。"

"胸焼けがしたり" does lead me to think it's fair to keep heartburn and
the rest, but I think in the majority of cases it refers to the acid
that comes up your throat that you then would typically swallow.

Anyway, for the sake of completeness, I've kept them. "sour stomach"
felt unrelated enough that I decided to remove it, but feel free to
add it back.

溜 isn't Jouyou, so 留飲 is used in newspapers.
留飲 appears to have its own entry. I've amended it to this
definition. I believe 留飲 is a duplicate and should be deleted.

There are already entries for 溜飲が下がる and 溜飲を下げる, which are
the senses which the entry for 留飲 seems to be intending. These
should probably also be amended with the 留飲 way of writing. I've
cross-referenced them here.

become ill
  Comments:
To start off with, here's a fixed, common, polite expression(I can surmise the meaning, but I have not found a full English translation for this common expression):
体調を崩されませんようご自愛ください
Can you say in English "try not to become indisposed?"

Anyway, this is a surprisingly common term(worth refining, I think), apparently used as a negated command "don't get sick, don't overwork yourself, don't overdo it, etc.".
体調を崩し	504144
体調を崩さ	124351 (beginning of expressions like 体調を崩されないよう 体調を崩さない...)
体調を崩す	88486
体調を崩しやすい	38826 ("I get sick easily", I imagine)

I'm volunteering my ignorance here. I was completely unaware that "indisposed" carried the meaning of "slightly unwell".

Growing up with phrases like "I'm a bit indisposed at the moment", I've come to believe this is a synonym for "temporarily unavailable due to being occupied with some other matter, call again later". The collins note above "or for a reason that you do not want to reveal" euphemistic usage of the term has surely contributed to this transformation.

The usual reverso translation of "indisposed" is 具合が悪い, which seems like the right tone for general excuse-making. Might be a better fit as the last entry there, rather than here.

Because "indisposed" was confusing for me, I'm going to make a second argument to drop it. Everything I've read suggests that "indisposed" is supposed to reflect "mild illness". It also seems to reflect something passive that "just happens", where as 体調を崩す seems quite a bit more severe(image results), and the verbiage seems to suggest that one has brought this on themselves in some way (through overwork, eating something undercooked, etc.).

Moving on to my edits of the other glosses...
This looks like "a thing that happens".
"I/he got sick":
体調を崩してしまった
体調を崩した	65976
体調を崩してしまった	14563
体調を崩しちゃった	1058

Likewise the negated forms 体調を崩さないように "try to not get sick. look after your health, etc.".

Seems like there is some overlap... 具合が悪い I am sick(or 体調を崩している 22523), 体調を崩した I got sick (具合が悪くなった?)

daijs うちなあぐち entry does not have the kanji, but leads with "「沖縄口」の意"
(our うちなあぐち entry does have the kanji in the kanji field though)
When people write 沖縄タイム, I'm sure 99% of yamato Japanese will read it as おきなわタイム, so this should probably be a reading too?
I saw some real hits for "沖縄タイム" on google but I'm wondering if the ngrams might be mixed up with 沖縄タイムス, the largest Okinawan
newspaper.
