Actually daijr only has the ろ reading (in their non-kanwa entry). But katakana ロ is common in newspaper titles:
"デモ隊1万人が議会突入試みる ジョージア、ロ議員演説に怒り"
so I think the original ろ;ロ[nokanji] was actually more correct.

I think it's because the word 未読/有読 
appear under the chat bubbles in LINE,
