Although it's in GG5, I think the "hiding place" sense is archaic/obsolete. It's not in the other JEs or meikyo/shinmeikai (or even daijs). Daijr's example is from the Meiji era.

It's actually "少雨の", etc. that has been translated as arid/semiarid. The EJs translate semiarid as 半乾燥, which we have already. I think this is best left alone. I'll leave it open for a bit in case of further discussion.

This might have an additional sense of arid or semiarid, as seen in a weblio example https://ejje.weblio.jp/sentence/content/少雨 and in how this compound is used for translating Koppen climate classification names. But the dicionaries I consulted don't seem to say so. Can someone confirm?
