Comments: | I don't think we have many other entries that consist of an adverb and a verb. Yes, it's a common set phrase, but this one just feels too obvious to me. I don't think Japanese learners of English should be a consideration here. JMdict is not designed for those people. I'm not a fan of the reverse search argument because it can be used to justify adding almost anything. As a natural consequence of Japanese and English being very different languages, English has countless expressions and phrases that "someone reasonably proficient in Japanese" would struggle to translate. I've always thought that test should only apply to commonly used nouns. --- Regarding "based on a true story", I don't think it ever works as a translation. 本当にあった describes the event or story itself rather than an adaptation of it. |
