Comments: | I agree. As 曳く, 牽く and 抽く are rare, I don't think it's worth splitting them out either. |
|

Comments: | The 引く/ひく extended family is always a bit of a problem as no two references agree on either the range of possible surface forms or the division of the senses. 明鏡 has just 引く, Nikkoku has 9 possible forms, and others are somewhere in between. GG5 has a solo 引く entry (11 senses) and a 引く/退く entry with 4 senses. We separate 退く, 惹く and 弾く into their own entries with mutual xrefs. I find this proposed amendment by アノンさん a bit messy, with its restrictions on all 19 senses. I'm not convinced the restrictions are really needed but I think a better solution would be to move 曳く, 牽く and 抽く to their own entries with mutual xrefs (as with the other 3 forms) and cut back the restrictions. |

Comments: | Request to add "fall back" / "retreat" Just saw やり合う時間はねえぜ。ひくぞ translated as "we don't have time to fight. let's retreat" before jumping out of a window in a 2-on-2 confrontation. Either this sense is independent of [17], or it would seem that "retreat"/"fall back" should be added to it, and possibly to the matching standalone entry for 退く. Note the Japanese kenkyuusha ref specifically identifies the sense as 後退する, for which we already have: 後退: retreat; falling back; moving backwards; reversing; backing up (of a vehicle); retrogression; retraction None of "let's draw back" "let's recede" or "let's move back" could have functioned in this context, the last of those being almost-but-not-quite there. |

I don't think "everchanging" is the best fit in any of these. They're talking about how things were, and how they have now changed into something else, e.g. one change, not how they are continually changing. |

Comments: | I don't think we have many other entries that consist of an adverb and a verb. Yes, it's a common set phrase, but this one just feels too obvious to me. I don't think Japanese learners of English should be a consideration here. JMdict is not designed for those people. I'm not a fan of the reverse search argument because it can be used to justify adding almost anything. As a natural consequence of Japanese and English being very different languages, English has countless expressions and phrases that "someone reasonably proficient in Japanese" would struggle to translate. I've always thought that test should only apply to commonly used nouns. --- Regarding "based on a true story", I don't think it ever works as a translation. 本当にあった describes the event or story itself rather than an adaptation of it. |
