[exp,n]
▶ sense of humor ▶ sense of humour |
6. | D 2019-04-06 05:03:27 Jim Breen <...address hidden...>
Comments: | OK. So it possibly/probably a case of dictionary compilers copying off each other without paying a lot of attention to whether it's a good translation. |
|
5. | D* 2019-04-06 01:09:33 Marcus Richert <...address hidden...>
Refs: | I see it actually gets 1147 hits in the new ngrams (while ユーモアのセンス gets 37190, and 笑いの感覚 2281, 笑いのセンス 36400). I don't think this is really analogous to "sense of humor" in English though. I conferred with a bilingual native speaker who thinks the expression is weird, and couldn't really put her finger on what she'd translate it (into English) as. She said it might be closer to "Impression/sensation of humor" and thought the eij examples were weird as well. Eijiro is after all an ei-wa dictionary first and foremost and I think that somehow shows in how their Japanese can be odd translations of the original English (just like with the Tanaka corpus) |
|
4. | D* 2019-04-06 00:20:06 Jim Breen <...address hidden...>
Refs: | Eijiro: とても悲しいユーモアの感覚 : black sense of humor [humour] ■ゆがんだユーモアの感覚 : twisted sense of humor [humour] ■生まれつきのユーモアの感覚 : innate sense of humor [humour] GG5: 上質なユーモアの感覚 a fine sense of humor 4 Tanaka sentences |
|
Comments: | I guess I have to question how "questionable" this one is. If I have a problem with it, it's because it's a low-scoring AのB phrase; not because it's never used in Japanese. FWIW ユーモアのセンス gets lots of Eijiro hits and is in one GG5 example and 16 Tanaka sentences. It should stay. |
