Comments: | The text-glosser lawys had a problem with handling ます-stems. Early in the process they are picked up by the verb deconjugate function, and that was preempting entries which were already in that form. I now populate the glossing dictionary with composed ます-stems of all verbs, but I didn't twig that the deconjugater got in first. I have just made sure that if the ます-stem exist as an entry, the normal verb handling is disabled. I think it's now giving the result Hendrik wants. |

Comments: | Hi, is there any way to get the kind of information shown above also when using "Text Glossing"? Right now we get this, which is, of course, quite right but nevertheless misleading. ;-) Possible inflected verb or adjective: (masu stem) 便る : 頼る(P); 便る 【たよる】 (v5r,vi) to rely on; to have recourse to; to depend on; (P); ED |

Comments: | Why wouldn't we count it's use in words that are already entries if we're talking about absolute usage? We have over 400 entries beginning with 小/こ. That alone makes it worthy of spec1, I think. If it's that productive, it also seems likely there's probably hundreds or thousands of similar words/constructions that aren't included in the dictionary. |

Comments: | not entirely sure i agree with this. despite it being called a 接頭 in most dictionaries, shinmeikai has it as 造語, and i feel like it is not particularly productive outside of words like 小皿 that we already have entries for. simply wanting something to "stand out" in comparison to other entries is not a valid reason for the tag, IMO. it should be about absolute frequency of usage. how often is this used as a productive suffix that could be added to entries that are not already in the dictionary? |

Refs: | https://www.japantimes.co.jp/life/2015/09/21/language/translation-gets-tough-bow-green-goddess/ "In reference to the same topic, Maruya also describes the plot using the phrase hijō ni guai ga warui (非常に具合が悪い). Many may recognize guai ga warui as a way to say “I don’t feel well,” a very useful phrase when calling in sick. Eijiroo even offers “feel like death warmed up” as one option. Once again the Green Goddess came to the rescue. It provides five different definitions for guai: condition, health, convenience, decency/propriety, and manner/fashion. I ended up with the translation “extremely indecent,” which works well with Maruya’s claim that Confucianists “shamed” The Tale of Genji into obscurity before the Showa period." |
