《sung by wrestlers during the extra entertainments at a sumo match》 ▶ dosukoi! (sumo chant) |

Comments: | I see your point. "Dosukoi" doesn't *mean* "a chant used by wrestlers"; it's the chant itself. I think I'm favour of restricting the use of expl glosses in the way you describe. However, I also think the gloss needs to be more than just a romanization of the Japanese. Your suggestion looks good to me. -- The "pump themselves up" part doesn't even appear to be correct. I've amended the note, incorporating GG5's gloss for 相撲甚句. |

Comments: | We haven't really settled on what should be a note and what should be an expl, but I've argued on the mailing list that info on how a word is used should be presented in a note (e.g. "used by sumo wrestlers") and also that any [expl] should work as a regular gloss, i.e. you should be able to replace the word with the explanation phrase in a sentence. (see the discussion on the 桑原桑原 entry for example) I'd be OK with just "dosukoi (sumo wrestler chant) " as well. The "pump themselves up" bit doesn't add very much. |

Comments: | I think it's appropriate that people looking up "kg" get to a matching entry. We have キロ/kilogram as a sense in 1042610. It could move to a separate entry with kg as a kanji form. Failing that, this could stay as it is. |
|
10. | A* 2023-11-27 08:18:19 Stephen Kraus <...address hidden...>
Comments: | We usually have these symbols in separate entries. "m" (meter), "g" (gram), and "v" (volt) are in the entries for エム, ジー, and ブイ, for example, not メートル, グラム, and ボルト. Judging by the results on youglish, it seems people would read "kg" as キロ in both formal and casual contexts >95% of the time. I think I'm in favor of dropping "kg", but if it stays I guess it should be placed before the rare kanji form. |

Comments: | くそ is quite a bit tamer than "shit" so I propose leading with "damn". I don't think "bullshit" works. I don't think col is needed on senses 3 and 4. Also, these senses are prefixes according to the kokugos. Added an adj-na sense. I've tried improving the ...もくそもない sense. Also, I've changed the PoS to [n]; although we're translating the expression "...もくそもない", くそ itself is still a noun. |

Comments: | There was a submission in 2005 to add 日付貴信. I can't find any discussion about it, but what went in was 付貴信. The pattern is usually seen in things like: "3月30日付貴信", but it really breaks 3月30日 + 付 + 貴信. We have 付/づけ as an entry for that usage already. The above note etc. may help, but I'm not sure it's a valid lexical item. |

I don't mind it not being here, but it may be a step too far to add it to the そつなく entry as "iK". It's the 事ム所 problem. |

Comments: | Dunno. I'm following the bit Rene wrote for the editorial policy: "For varieties, the abbreviation "var." must be used." I see that it's usually in the form "Brassica oleracea var. botrytis", and these dangling "var." are the minority. From what I'm reading about camelias these entries refer to different cultivars - there are really only two "vars". We'd better check with Rene - he's the expert in this field. |
|
4. | A* 2019-03-07 07:44:06 Marcus Richert <...address hidden...>
Comments: | Normally in latin nomenclature you'd have the "var." bit followed by the name of the variety, e.g. something like "Camellia japonica var. kagurajishi", right? If we're using "var." to mean "variety of Camelia japonica", might it be better to phrase it like that? |

Comments: | Nicolas, I want to thank you for all your submissions, but could you maybe try and provide more sources than just Wikipedia articles in the future? It would make our job a little easier. Policy: http://www.edrdg.org/wiki/index.php/Editorial_policy If the reference includes a Wikipedia article, quote the URL. Please note that a Japanese Wikipedia article by itself is not necessarily a good source for a dictionary entry. Some articles are simply translations from an English page and not evidence that a term is in use in Japanese. Sometimes an article only covers one aspect of a term's usage, and there are other senses which need to be covered. It is best to check the term in other sources and state that in the References section. |

Comments: | 恒等 is not included in any dictionaries, and the usual term for identity in maths is 恒等式. However it appears in the Unidic morpheme lexicon with a tag of 形状詞 which means "adjectival noun" in their classification, and it is part of many recognized compounds such as 恒等写像, 恒等変換, 恒等関数, etc. with the meaning of "identity". It should be included here, both for its prefix role, and to limit mis-parses in text-glossing. |

Comments: | there's no entry for this in any kokugo. online results are almost entirely for a fictional manga character. britannica has it as the F-86 Sabre; daijs has it as the honda saber (a sedan), not to be confused with the honda sabre (a motorcycle). probably many more senses could be added (as in wikipedia). i suggest moving to enamdict. |
