Comments: | I'm pulling that proposed note. After discussing it with some NSJs I think I (and some others) have over-interpreted the rather striking differences in what Google images returns for 強姦 and レイプ. I suspect it's more a case that the people putting up pages with kinky pictures *don't* use 強姦 rather than it being a specific context or association with レイプ. As the passages which Marcus quoted indicate, it appears that in conversational Japanese the usual word is レイプ and 強姦 and 暴行 are more likely to be found news, legal, etc. contexts. |

Comments: | I don't think it's just an approximation of "げんいん" but a different pronunciation, see the answers in the survey: 「自分の滑舌の悪さを感 じる」 Also the fact that people type it (and then leave it as hiragana, because they can't convert it properly) is another reason why I think we should include it. I think 全員 should also have a ぜいいん[ik] reading since it's high up in the list. If there's enough evidence of 店員, etc. being read as ていいん and so on then I think we should add those reading to those entries too. |
6. | A* 2019-03-30 02:42:11 Robin Scott <...address hidden...> | |
Comments: | Isn't げいいん just an approximation of how げんいん is pronounced rather than an irregular reading? It's the same with 全員, 店員, 団員, etc. I don't see any evidence that it's a common mistake. Two of those links refer to the same incident. |

The term may be *the* example of a word-in-transformation in Japanese. I was *taught* to say "hwinki", in Japan, in a Japanese classroom, by a late-20s/early-30s Japanese teacher. The impression was that your speech would sound a bit stilted if you tried to say huniki. (perhaps like "whatcha doin?"/ "what are you doing") |

Comments: | I encountered this as [1](example below). More comments at the main 心気 entry. I think 心気 is clearly its own thing by the ngrams(18376), and by the counts given for 心気くさい(~100), I think this kanji is best hidden under [sK] as a spelling error. sankoku splits the senses [1] and [2]. I sometimes see these entries were very unrelated glosses are sitting next to each other to avoid splitting senses... In the context I saw this was distinctly nothing to do with annoyance or irritation. I'm not sure how to interpret sankoku's dialect notes. Note that they are different for [1] and [2]. The もと in (もと関西方言) suggests to me that this *was* kansai-ben, but is now more generally recognized? Do we note this("formerly kansaiben?") [2] is still recorded as a strictly regional dialect, but is more broad than kansaiben. (関西・中部・中国方言) The use I encountered was by a young, brash, anime warrior-type character, and I know these figures often get "rough" dialects assigned to them, but I'm not an expert on that. Frieren: 俺がこの村に来たとき、みんな辛気くさい顔して、竜の恐怖におびえていた。そんな連中がさ、今で幸せそう笑っているんだよ When I arrived here, all of the villagers wore grim expressions and lived in fear of the dragon. Now those people are smiling happily ==== I swapped kanji ordering purely on the ngrams where the kanji form has a 3-1 lead, though くさい was written in kanji where I encountered it. |

Gomeifuku o oinori moushiagemasu ご冥福をお祈り申し上げます: May they rest in peace (in the afterlife) “Gomeifuku wo oinori mou shiagemasu” is a prayer for the deceased’s soul meaning “May his/her soul rest in peace” or “I pray for his/her happiness in the afterlife”. The kanji 冥 means “dark” and is used in 冥土 (meido, the underworld), while 福 (fuku) means good fortune. Together, 冥福 (meifuku) means happiness in the afterlife. It is normally used in condolence messages in Buddhist religion, so you need to be careful when using this phrase. It may be offensive if the deceased or bereaved family does not believe in the afterlife. It is best to avoid saying this if you are not sure of their religion. https://buddha-and-me.blogspot.com/2012/12/does-buddhist-say-rest-in-peace.html?m=1 Does Buddhist say "rest in peace"? Many people often say "rest in peace" ("RIP") when wishing someone who had died. It occurs to me that it is actually a quote with Christian origins, particularly Catholic... In Buddhism we do not rest in eternity or wait to be re-surrected by anyone. We continue into the next rebirth. Hence, as a Buddhist, it is more appropriate that we wish that the deceased will be reborn in the Buddha's Pure Land or reborn as a perfect human again or just a happy rebirth. But it is just a small thing. It is not a big thing even if you say it because you are used to saying it. But I just want to clarify. |
Comments: | Comments and refs on 安らかに眠れ. 冥福 appears to be a Buddhist expression, which would explain the prevalence of this term in Japanese (vs. 安らかに眠れ in particular). I feel like "rest in peace" is a western gloss of convenience which accurately communicates "condolences for someone's parting", but is quite disconnected with what this expression actually implies. (rebirth seems like quite the opposite of "rest"). But I guess it's just so common that it is what it is. Note the warning: "It is normally used in condolence messages in Buddhist religion, so you need to be careful when using this phrase. It may be offensive if the deceased or bereaved family does not believe in the afterlife. It is best to avoid saying this if you are not sure of their religion." Another warning I saw (and which alc seems to explicitly confirm): You should be careful about addressing this *at* the deceased, or otherwise specify whose soul you're praying for (not the listener): 〇〇さんのご冥福をお祈りします。 This may only be a minor social faux-pas that is not always observed. (But ideally you don't want to say "I pray for *your* soul in the afterlife" to the family of the deceased). Changed from "may their soul" to "may your soul" to reflect this default. (I agree, it seems like context should make clear... but I read the warning) On the death of a cast member of the popular netflix real-life drama: https://www.instagram.com/p/CAieuggFPRt/?utm_source=ig_embed&ig_rid=44b069af-f4bd-4c73-a8cf-eab104870a4d ご冥福をお祈りします。 Rest in paradise Hana (addressed *at* the deceased, as in English) |
