Comments: | I was going to say this can't mean both "downward compatibility" and "forward compatibility" but a bit of Googling led me to the page linked above and it turns out the situation is rather complicated. First of all, there are two sets of terms with similar meanings: 下位互換 and 前方互換, and 上位互換 and 後発互換. 下位互換 refers to compatibility with components/data from higher tier systems or software (e.g. a file generated from more premium edition of an application), whereas "forward compatible" (or "upward compatible") relates to later (i.e. newer) systems/software. For 上位互換 and 後発互換, just switch "higher" with "lower", and "later" with "older". As far as I'm aware, there are no equivalent terms in English for 下位互換 and 上位互換. The JEs just treat them as synonyms of 前方互換 and 後発互換 ("upward compatible"/forward compatible" and "downward compatible"/backward compatible"). According to the link above, Japanese speakers often do the same thing: using 下位互換 and 上位互換 when they really mean 前方互換 and 後発互換. To make matters more confusing, Japanese speakers also sometimes confuse 下位互換 and 上位互換 (which have opposite meanings). GG5 recognises this by having 2 senses. ---- Taking all of the above in account, I've had a go at reorganising this entry. There are really 4 senses here but I think that would be overkill so I've made a combined 下位互換/前方互換 sense and a combined 上位互換/後発互換 sense, marking the second as incorrect. |

Comments: | I think we need a "to be interested in: to be curious about" sense. This usage is extremely common and it doesn't have the negative nuance of sense 1. I also think this can replace the "fancy; like" sense. I asked 3 native speakers about the "物事がそんなにゆっくり変化する世界は気にならない" sentence and they all agreed that 気にならない should be 気に入らない. I suggest replacing it with this sentence: "これらの絵でどれか気になるものはありますか" I've moved the "feel like doing" sense down so those sentence will also need to be retagged. |
